Twenty-five years ago, I left my home country of Sweden to start a new chapter in Dallas, Texas. As a High Touch Operations Manager supporting T-Mobile for the last decade, I love every aspect of my role.

One of the many things I appreciate about working at Cisco is our ability to extend a helping hand through the Time2Give program.

Recently, I spent two weeks volunteering in Sweden to help alleviate the loneliness felt by many, including my mother.

Despite our daily calls, my 89-year-old mother often faces challenges with technology. Her reliance on an old-fashioned phone and difficulties with her computer highlight the barriers many elderly people face.

To keep her connected, I gave her a digital picture frame I can update remotely. I considered setting up an Alexa device to simplify communication and make her feel more connected to the world around her.

During my Time2Give, I joined Simonsland, a community organization that fosters connections through diverse activities. The volunteer experience was enriched by my mom, who joined me for bingo and fika — a Swedish tradition of gathering over coffee and conversation.

As a designated fika friend, I engaged with those who might otherwise feel isolated, reinforcing the importance of human connection.

Seniors keep the beat and their hearts pumping in gymnastics.

Another highlight was facilitating VR experiences, where participants were transported to places like the Sydney Opera House or Argentina’s Iguazu Falls. Witnessing their awe and excitement was a reminder of how technology can bridge gaps and bring joy.

I also joined an enlightening AI seminar, showcasing how emerging technologies can empower communities and improve daily life. During the seminar, there was a wide range of questions. Some participants were curious about its applications, while others hadn't heard of AI.

Leading a senior gymnastics class was an invigorating challenge. Despite language barriers, we communicated through music and movement, creating a fun, encouraging space.

A party for youth with intellectual disabilities was joyous, filled with music and dancing. These kids and young adults embraced me with such enthusiasm that it brought tears to my eyes, underscoring the power of community support and inclusion.

I also helped in the community café and kitchen. Joining the senior cooking group was a delightful exchange of culinary knowledge. Their stories and recipes were rich with tradition, and the joy of cooking together fostered a sense of belonging.

Activities like trivia games sparked friendly competition and laughter, emphasizing mental stimulation and social interaction.

I find myself hopeful about the role technology might play in aiding the older generation.

The senior cooking group shared their culinary traditions, preparing pork tenderloin with Hasselback potatoes and a Swedish carrot cake from scratch.

As we age, our familiarity with technology will likely make it easier for us to integrate new innovations into our daily lives. Future advancements may offer more intuitive, accessible ways for aging adults to stay connected with loved ones, maintain their independence, and enrich their lives.

From AI companions to assistive devices, the potential is vast for technology to ease the challenges of aging and foster a sense of community and support.

My experience was one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. I learned that success isn't solely about productivity or financial performance, but also about bringing a smile to someone's face or being a friend during difficult times.

Volunteering allowed me to reconnect with my roots and contribute to the well-being of others, reinforcing my belief in the transformative power of community service. I gained invaluable empathy, patience, and shared human experience. I’ve also recently joined the Cisco Adult Caregiver Network to learn from others caring for aging parents.

I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to take advantage of the volunteer time that Cisco offers, whether in your local community or across the globe. Embrace the opportunity to give back, to learn, and to grow. It's a chance to make a meaningful impact.
