SAN JOSE, Calif., June 8, 2004 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco® Intelligent Roadway Solutions, a unique set of networking technologies and services tailored for the global roadways industry. Cisco Intelligent Roadway Solutions are a component of the recently announced Cisco Intelligent Transportation Solution (http://newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/2004/prod_033004c.html), which also includes Intelligent Airport Solutions, Intelligent Public Transportation Solutions, and Intelligent Seaport Solutions.

Cisco Intelligent Roadway Solutions help departments and ministries of transportation reduce traffic congestion, improve security, and lower operating costs through the use of innovative IP-based networking solutions that connect traffic management centers, toll collection and traveler applications together into a seamless system.

"Due to environmental, space and budget constraints, traffic planners often cannot build new roads to solve traffic congestion, security, and pollution problems but must find new ways to make the existing roads more efficient and secure," said Neil Schuster, president, Intelligent Transportation Society of America. "A common communications network infrastructure is the foundation for addressing these problems and delivering an efficient, cost-effective Intelligent Transportation System deployment. An intelligent network allows multiple transportation regions and agencies such as police, fire, and rescue teams, to share information and communicate in real time to alleviate traffic congestion and protect the traveler."

Cisco Intelligent Roadway Solutions at Work

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority needed a resilient, scalable communications infrastructure that would support its modernization efforts after the consolidation of the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. Working with Cisco, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority took advantage of 360 miles of statewide roadside fiber to improve process and operational efficiencies. The optical solution includes Cisco storage, security and hardened switch offerings.

"The Cisco solution delivers significant bandwidth that has created an extremely scalable network. We extended our service to traffic operations centers, diverse data centers and connected all of our facilities to our main offices," said Michael Lapolla, executive director, New Jersey Turnpike Authority. "As a result, we have realized significant cost savings and are evaluating sharing the network with other agencies to gain further operational efficiencies and to better serve the public."

The top traffic management goal for the Utah Department of Transportation (DOT) is to utilize resources as efficiently as possible. As a result of the Cisco intelligent IP infrastructure integrated with Transcore Advanced Traffic Management Systems applications, the Utah DOT has contributed to a 36 percent reduction in freeway delays, a 15 percent decrease in traffic signal stops and delays, a 25 percent improvement in incident response and clearance time, and a decrease in operational expenses.

"A highly secure single network for video and data enables real-time roadside data to be integrated with our optimized traffic management centers to provide cohesive communications and better incident coordination with other agencies, said Richard Manser, P.E., ITS deployment engineer, Utah Department of Transportation. "The network enables rapid distribution of critical roadway information to the media and travelers."

Additional customers benefiting from Cisco Systems® networking solutions include: Beaufort County Department of Transportation (DOT), California DOT (CalTrans), Kansas DOT, Missouri DOT, Pennsylvania DOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike, and Tennessee DOT.

Cisco Intelligent Roadway Solutions

The Cisco Intelligent Roadway Solutions include the following components designed to meet the needs of traffic authorities and help improve driver experiences around the world.Roadside Solutions (Advanced Traffic Management Solutions)

  • Integration of video surveillance, traffic sensors and variable message boards on a converged video and data network to collect and distribute roadside data and video surveillance images to Traffic Management Centers.
  • Cisco IP over Ethernet solutions help enable the delivery of both wireless and wired solutions on a secure and open standards-based network.
  • Traffic light control system solutions which use Cisco mobility solutions and Cisco switches to deliver real-time traffic light control and surveillance, deployment flexibility, and lower costs.

Traffic Management Center Solutions

  • Cisco Business Ready Data Center solutions provide cohesive network security, help enable data center consolidation and colocation, improve interagency communications and take advantage of a single network for roadside and traffic management center needs.
  • Real-time wired and wireless communications, data sharing, and situation analysis between traffic management centers, emergency response agencies and transit agencies.
  • Consistent network security services across the network for threat defense, highly secure connectivity, trust and identity management.
  • Advanced Traveler Information Solutions (ATIS)
  • Distribution of real-time traffic data to travelers via Websites, pagers, cell phones and 511 services by using Cisco IP Telephony, Cisco IP Contact Center (IPCC) and Cisco IP Interactive Voice Response (IVR) solutions.

Partnering for Success

To deliver end-to-end business solutions to customers, Cisco has engaged with industry leaders such as IBM, MasTec, National Engineering Technology (NET), Naztec, PB Farradyne, TransCore, and others.

"To keep up with changing business needs, our customers understand they must migrate from multiple, disparate networks to a single, intelligent network as the foundation for roadside, traffic management center, traveler and back office applications," said Pierre-Paul Allard, vice president, Enterprise Marketing, Cisco Systems. "Working with our business partners, Cisco Intelligent Roadway Solutions are helping customers alleviate roadway congestion, help meet security and pollution mandates, and reduce costs."
