MELBOURNE, August 21, 2003 - Cisco Systems® announced today that specialist broadband carrier, Uecomm, has selected Cisco to provide the equipment for an upgrade to its Metropolitan Ethernet network. The deployment will enhance Uecomm's ability to deliver superior data, voice and video services to enterprise customers at speeds of up to multiple gigabits per second (Gbps).

In 2000, Uecomm was the first Australian telecommunications carrier to deploy Metropolitan Ethernet networking. Earlier this year, Uecomm completed the design for an upgrade to the network, which will accommodate the accelerating growth in demand for very high-speed data, video and voice services.

The solution provided by Cisco involves the deployment of a combination of Cisco 7600 Series routers and Cisco Catalyst 4500 and Catalyst 3550 series switches across the national Uecomm network. It will allow Uecomm to streamline service provisioning for customers and will enhance Uecomm's network capacity, performance and resilience.

Cisco regional manager for the service provider market, Peter Papaioannou, said; "This deployment will enable Uecomm to remain at the forefront of metro Ethernet service providers in Australia. The solution will enhance Uecomm's network performance and reliability, and it will introduce a greater level of robustness and resilience to the operation of the network."

According to analyst firm IDC, the market for metro Ethernet subscribers is growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 27 percent and will reach $A159 million by 2007.

Uecomm products and marketing director, Brendan Park, said;"Uecomm is experiencing strong growth in customer connections and ever-increasing interest in our Ethernet Virtual Local Area Networking (VLAN) service. As a leading specialist provider of high-speed data services, it is vital that we continue to deliver the advanced features and exceptional service levels our customers demand. We selected Cisco because its technological leadership and commitment to customer support will enable us to continue to exceed our customers' expectations," Mr Park said.
