Advanced standing will be available for 17 diploma courses in four polytechnics

SINGAPORE - March 19, 2003 - GCE 'O' Level holders and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduates who have completed the Cisco Networking Academy Program may be granted partial or full exemptions in 17 diploma courses at the four leading polytechnics in Singapore. They are Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.

Polytechnics that run the Cisco Networking Academy Program curriculum as independent modules within their diploma courses may grant students full exemptions. Polytechnics that have integrated the Cisco Networking Academy Program curriculum into the entire course may grant student partial exemptions for modules related to the Cisco Networking Academy Program. Students will only be considered for advanced standing upon successful admission by the respective polytechnic for the course.

The Cisco Networking Academy Program curriculum trains students to design, build, and maintain computer networks. The program is an e-learning model that delivers web-based educational content, online testing, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, and instructor training and support.

The program has been running in Singapore schools since 1998. These schools include Dunman High, Nan Hua Secondary, Raffles Institution, St Francis Methodist, Chinese High, Dunman Secondary, Madrasah Al-Arabiah, as well as eight ITEs.

"The Cisco Networking Academy program has been very successful in Singapore and around the world because of its solid foundation in academia. It is a valuable education program that delivers the fundamentals of a relevant industry skill to young students and it is done through the schools themselves," said James Chia, managing director, Singapore, Cisco Systems.

"With the secondary schools and ITEs offering the program, it made sense for the polytechnics to recognize the achievements of the students coming through from those avenues. This will help the program deepen its roots in the local education system," he added.

"The Cisco Networking Academy Program has generated a great deal of interest among students taking the IT-related courses in Nanyang Polytechnic. Besides getting their diploma, students can now graduate with another recognized professional certification by completing the Cisco Curriculum," said Mr Chan Yew Meng, director of School of Engineering/Electronics, Nanyang Polytechnic.
