DAVAO CITY, Philippines - July 10, 2002 - Encouraged by the vision of implementing cutting-edge e-learning curriculum to their students, the Brokenshire College, the Holy Child School of Davao, the University of the Immaculate Concepcion, and the University of Mindanao have formed a consortium to implement the Cisco Networking Academy Program in Davao.

The consortium members will each serve as Cisco Local Networking Academies, with the Consortium Cisco Laboratory serving as the instructional laboratory for the Networking Academy classes. The four schools, as Local Academies, will be managed by Philippine Science High School, a Cisco Regional Networking Academy.

"By pooling their resources and thinking creatively, the four schools are giving students in Davao access to networking and Internet education and creating new opportunities for them," said Raymond Huang, country manager of Cisco Systems Philippines. "This will no doubt create a new source of networking professionals and contribute to the country's technology development goals."

"The Cisco Networking Academy Program Davao Consortium is a collective effort of member schools to offer high quality education and training in Information Technology. This shows their foresight in recognizing information and communications technology as one of the enabling tools in the country's development," said Ana Chupungco of the Philippine Science High School.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Virtual Center for Technology Innovation in Information Technology (VCTI-IT), is providing funding for the training of the consortium's instructors, while the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE) will manage the consortium's laboratory.

"The consortium aims to contribute in education development through the training IT professionals and educators in the areas of networking, systems development and programming. This is consistent with the VCTI-IT's objectives to upgrade the standard of information technology education in Davao," said Jaime Caro, associate professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science of the University of the Philippines, and project leader of VCTI-IT.
