Cisco Networking Local Academy established at Saint Kentigern College

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - June 25, 2002 - Saint Kentigern College, one of New Zealand's most technologically advanced college campuses, is adding to its hi-tech focus with the introduction of the Cisco Networking Academy Program.

Launched in 1997, the program is an internationally recognised, 280-hour vocational training course, which teaches secondary school and tertiary students the fundamentals of computer and Internet Networking. The program is considered the industry's best standards-based course and is established in more than 20 locations across New Zealand and in 141 countries worldwide.

Auckland's Saint Kentigern College is offering year 12 and 13 students and staff the opportunity to do the first stage of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) qualification course. There are 13 students enrolled on the program, which began in Term Two this year.

The program is currently being taught outside the normal school day but the College is expecting to integrate the program into the mainstream ICT curriculum next year and is also considering extending it to adult learners and parents of students in the future.

The introduction of the Cisco Networking Academy program to Saint Kentigern, a college of 1,100 students, follows its establishment in 1996 of an ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) program. Today, about 90% of Saint Kentigern students study with their own Toshiba portable notebook and are securely connected through Cisco wireless technology to the school's campus network.

Mr Walter Chieng, Director of ICT at Saint Kentigern College, said: "The Cisco Networking Academy will provide us with the opportunity to work more closely with the University of Auckland and in particular the School of Management Science and Information Systems where the regional authority of the Cisco Networking Academy is based."

Said Cisco's New Zealand Country Manager, Tim Hemingway: "We have been very impressed with the progressive approach to Internet learning and networking at the College and believe that under Mr Chieng's direction the academy will contribute much to the students and ultimately to the industry."
