SINGAPORE - September 2, 1998 - Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, has won a contract from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to install the network infrastructure for schools and junior colleges in Singapore. The contract is part of a tender awarded under the MOE's IT Masterplan for Education for Phase 2 schools.

The contract involves the installation of 26 Catalyst. 5500 and 520 Catalyst 2900 switches, and was won in conjunction with three Cisco Systems integrators: National Computer Systems (NCS), Digital Equipment Asia-Pacific Pte. Ltd. and Unisys. The switches will provide the basic infrastructure of the new network, enabling data traffic to travel at very high speeds within the schools, providing easy access to teaching resources as well as to MOE.

"We are delighted to be involved in the network infrastructure for the schools project because it will play a significant role in the future education of Singapore students and the raising of overall academic standards," said Todd Abbott, managing director of South Asia for Cisco Systems. "The project also demonstrates our continued success in the area of education and our commitment to assisting the development of future generations of Singaporeans."

The network infrastructure that Cisco Systems and its partners are providing for the schools will support Internet access and other MOE applications and, more importantly, be able to integrate text, images, voice, video and data on a single platform.

The Cisco Catalyst switches were selected because they matched the requirements for scalability, reliability, fault tolerance, security, ease of use and management, and easy ability to upgrade.

The Catalyst 5500 is Cisco's 13-slot, high-end member of the Catalyst 5000 family of multilayer switches supporting Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, gigabit Ethernet, FDDI or ATM technologies. This solution can be deployed in enterprise backbones as a feature-rich, robust, multilayer switch, or as a high-density, reliable wiring closet solution. The Catalyst 5500 series also supports Layer 3 switching and multiprotocol routing with extensive quality of service and multimedia capabilities.

The Catalyst 2900 is a family of 10/100 autosensing Fast Ethernet switches that come in 8-, 16- and 24-port models. The switches have a switch fabric of 3.2 Gbps and a forwarding rate of 3 million packets per second, delivering wire-speed performance across all ports.
