Augmented and Virtual Reality are no longer the stuff of science fiction. They are real, they are here, and they’re about to fundamentally change the way we work and collaborate.
These new technologies create a digital, immersive experience that closes the gap between virtual and in-person collaboration in the world of hybrid work.
Cisco’s Webex Hologram is an industry first, using 3D holograms to take virtual meetings to a whole new level. With 64 percent of employees agreeing that being able to work remotely directly affects whether they stay or leave a job (source: Cisco Hybrid Work Index), organizations are only too aware that they need to be able to offer a range of flexible working solutions. But that’s not always easy, particularly when teams need to get hands-on and interact with physical objects.
Webex Hologram is the kind of innovation that will be essential in a world forever changed by the Covid-19 pandemic. People are still navigating the challenges and concerns brought by the pandemicBut one thing is certain: This new world of work is hybrid. That means connecting, and collaborating with colleagues around the world in all-new ways, And those connections need to be seamless, collaborative, and secure.
At Cisco, we look at powering hybrid work in two distinct ways: enabling a Hybrid Workforce and transforming Hybrid Workspaces. A Hybrid Workforce must be able to collaborate securely from anywhere, anytime. Transforming a Hybrid Workspace must bring together networking, security, and collaboration tools to enhance health and well-being as well as safety and efficiencies.
Webex Hologram is opening our minds to new ways of working together. Photorealism transforms an individual’s presence in a far more realistic way than, say, an avatar could. That’s because the hologram is, in effect, you, in real time, not an imagined representation. As holograms, presenters can share both physical content and digital content, co-creating and collaborating within a single, immersive, interactive, shared experience. Take a car manufacturer, for instance. Engineers can work together on a physical prototype of the vehicle and provide feedback on the design.
As cool as all that seems, Jeetu Patel, Cisco’s executive vice president and general manager for Security and Collaboration, put it into a wider context.
“Our mission at Cisco is to empower the three billion digital workers on the planet to participate equally from anywhere in the world,” he said. “Webex Hologram represents a large step toward our mission of delivering a delivering a work experience so seamless that there is no gap between virtual and in-person collaboration.”
