My career has been a journey of transformation, from the Marine Corps to law enforcement, and finally to Cisco, where I've found a new way to serve. Each step has shaped who I am, but it's at Cisco where I've discovered the convergence of my passions for technology, service, and innovation.

A life of service and adventure

It all started in high school when I realized the traditional 9-to-5 life wasn't for me.

I craved adventure and service, which led me to the U.S. Marine Corps. There, I traveled the world, from the historic landscapes of Greece to the bustling streets of Japan, and even the challenging terrains of Afghanistan.

These experiences broadened my horizons and instilled my love for diverse cultures and places.

After my military service, I sought a career that combined the thrill of adventure with the stability needed to raise a family. For me, law enforcement was that perfect blend.

As a police officer and later a detective, I navigated the complexities of human stories and the intricacies of criminal investigations. My role evolved over time, from the adrenaline of foot chases to the meticulous work of solving homicides and leading the Special Victims Unit.

The tech spark

Throughout my career in law enforcement, technology played an increasingly pivotal role.

I was fascinated by the digital world's impact on crime and society. My interest was further piqued by the challenges of adapting to new apps and technologies that criminals exploited, requiring constant learning and adaptation.

One day, a job as a Criminal Justice Research Analyst caught my eye, it was a leap into the unknown, but I took the chance and landed the role.

As a liaison between PhDs and active law enforcement officers, I worked on projects providing input on software for police staffing. This experience was a stepping stone into tech, while bringing in my expertise from law enforcement.

Embracing change at Cisco

In 2021, I joined Cisco as a Customer Success Manager. It was a transformative moment, marking the first time in my adult life that crime wasn't my daily focus. Instead, I found myself in a positive environment, surrounded by people passionate about technology and innovation.

At Cisco, I could leverage my unique background to help customers navigate their digital transformations, drawing on my experiences in the military and law enforcement to provide a unique perspective on security and teamwork.

A big part of my positive experience has been Cisco’s commitment to inclusive communities.

As an active member of the VETS inclusive community and a previous Co-Lead for two years, I've found a supportive network that values diverse backgrounds and experiences. VETS honors my military service and also allows me to connect with fellow veterans and contribute to initiatives that make Cisco a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.

Cisco's hybrid work resonated deeply with me.

It liberated me from the monotony of a daily commute and allowed me to be present for my family's important moments. My early adoption and love of technology found a new home at Cisco, where I could contribute to shaping the future of work.

A message of encouragement

For those contemplating a career shift, my advice is to reflect on what you love and how you can bring that passion to your new path.

Don't be discouraged by the thought of starting over. Your skills and experiences are valuable. With the right opportunity, you can demonstrate your worth.

Stay prepared and open to new possibilities: The role you'll cherish in a decade may not even exist yet.

As I look forward, I'm grateful for the journey that brought me here. I cherish the good in humanity that I experience daily. My story is a testament to the power of change and the endless possibilities that await when you dare to take that first step.
