MOSCOW – February 28, 2012 – Cisco today announced the completion of a 100G technology test carried out by Bashinformsvyaz, one of the largest service providers in the Urals region, in cooperation with Cisco and I-Teco, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner in Russia. The parties successfully tested data transmission at the rate of 100 gigabitsper second in an existing Bashinformsvyaz dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM)network.

The project was carried out in the network segment between the cities of Ufa and Sterlitamak in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The Bashinformsvyaz DWDM infrastructure is based on the Cisco® ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) as the core of the company's backbone network.  The test evaluated data transfer at 100 Gbps in DWDM network segments at distances of 165, 648, 932, 985, and 1,296 kilometers (103, 403, 579, 612, and 805 miles).

The 100G services were supported by state-of-the-art reconfigurable Cisco DWDM transponders that could use any of the 96 wavelengths with standards-based CP-QPSK modulation. The transponders can operate at a distance well in excess of 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles) without signal regeneration. They were installed in compact M6 chassis and connected to software-reconfigurable ROADMs of the existing network. All parameters of the DWDM network were configured automatically by the smart management subsystem and optical channel power control tools integrated in the Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP platform. During the test the traffic was transferred at 100 Gbps without failure and degradation of existing 10 Gbps services, showing the investment protection on the installed network and existing fiber plant.

Additionally, the companies tested interworking of the Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP DWDM platform and Cisco ASR 9000 Series routers in providing 100 Gigabit Ethernet services over the DWDM network.  The data emulated by the IP traffic generator fully utilized the 100 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces of the Cisco ASR 9000 Series routers and was transferred without error at a distance of 813 km (505 miles). The project proves that the IP and DWDM infrastructure of Bashinformsvyaz is completely ready for migration to the next evolutionary level.

  • Shavkat Yanyshev, CTO, Bashinformsvyaz:

"While preparing our backbone network to the 100G test we were basically concerned about the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) growth due to a different geometry of single-mode fiber cores installed at different times for the last 16 years. We paid additional attention to physical components (welded junctures, dry contacts, dynamic loads, curves, DMP controls). The 24-hour-long measurements showed zero packet loss at 100 Gbps. As a result, Bashinformsvyaz will be able to process any traffic volumes in the next four to five years!"

  • Boris Chervakov, SE, Cisco, Russia/CIS:

"Thanks to continuous investments in innovations and invariable focus on TCO reduction, Cisco offers the most advanced high-tech solutions for next-generation DWDM networks.  Today Cisco's 100G DWDM transponders support industry-leading performance and port density, which makes it possible to implement 100G technology in networks of any complexity. This solution is closely integrated with routers and dramatically simplifies network deployment and operation."
