Energotel Targets New Customer Segments with Next- Generation Network

Telecommunications Company Designs Business Strategy Based on Cisco's Innovative Optical Technology

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - July 7, 2009 – Cisco today announced that Slovak telecommunications operator Energotel has deployed a Cisco® Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) based on Cisco's optical networking and routing technologies. The new backbone spans more than 2,500 km (1,553 miles) and connects 150 cities. The IP NGN infrastructure provides increased network capacity and helps enable Energotel to enter the market of wholesale data transit services with integrated voice, video and data.

  • Energotel has deployed a next-generation optical transport network based on a nationwide dense wavelength division-multiplexing (DWDM) infrastructure, equipped with the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP).
  • Energotel's new Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) core and aggregation infrastructure is based on Cisco 7600 Series Routers and Cisco Catalyst® 3750 Metro Series Switches to support "triple play" service delivery.
  • The DWDM technology utilizes reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) devices. This enables a significant network capacity increase over the existing optical fiber infrastructure and, as a result, allows more customers to be connected.
  • As one of the critical ingredients in the network foundation, the Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP also features new Carrier Ethernet cards (Xponders), including DWDM transmission and Layer 2 switching functions. These features offer Energotel the optimum combination of flexibility, capacity and future-proofing.
  • The Energotel IP NGN has been designed to be managed easily by a central team. A new data circuit with a higher bandwidth, enhanced security and increased reliability between any two or more points in the network can be set up and managed remotely from a central location in a few minutes, without the need for on-site manual interventions or changes to the actual optical fiber configuration.
  • The deployment allows Energotel, whose original core business was providing commercial access to unused capacities within the telecommunications infrastructure of power distribution companies, to focus entirely on providing data transit services on a wholesale basis to service providers.
