SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 6, 2007 -- Cisco® today unveiled a new version of its Universal Broadband Router (uBR) cable modem termination system (CMTS) designed to give cable operators a service-enabling CMTS solution that allows them to improve operational efficiencies and more rapidly launch new services.
Available later this year, the compact Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS platform offers cable operators a superior, cost-effective platform for the delivery of high-speed data, voice and video services. Targeted at smaller entry and greenfield deployment hubs, the new Cisco CMTS solution requires low capital investment and minimal setup time to launch revenue-generating services. It supports up to 5,000 subscribers.
The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS solution extends the Cisco uBR product family, which also includes the Cisco uBR7100 series, Cisco uBR7246VXR and Cisco uBR10012 CMTS platforms. The range of products in the Cisco uBR family provides cable operators the flexibility to choose the platform that best meets their specific deployment needs. The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS is based on the CableLabs®' Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS® 3.0) and supports channel-bonding services.
Cable broadband providers test Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS platform
Dansk Kabel TV A/S, a subsidiary of the largest cable broadband provider in Denmark, is currently trialing the Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS platform to provide content and services to regional and municipal cable operator partners throughout Denmark.
"We are involved in a successful trial of the Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS," said Jakob Kristjansen, Technical Manager of Dansk Kabel TV. "Our network is already equipped with the Cisco uBR10012 and Cisco uBR7246VXR CMTS platforms, which provide the stability and density that we need for larger installations. We believe the compact Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS can serve areas with lower density requirements and its modular form factor provides us the flexibility to add capacity and functionality as we need it. This will allow us to continue delivering a strong broadband entertainment package to our customers and also give us the scope to offer performance improvements and new services in the future."
The Cisco uBR7225VXR platform has also been in field trials at A+, the third largest broadband service provider in Denmark. "A+ has a mix of medium and small sized networks where the Cisco uBR7225VXR solution can play a key role in enhancing our service offering," said A+ CEO Henrik Lind. "The Cisco uBR7225VXR platform will allow us to extend the quality of experience for users connected to smaller networks so that they can enjoy the full range of services that we can deliver to our larger, denser areas using the Cisco uBR7246VXR platform. An important selection criteria for A+ is cost and future investment protection and the Cisco uBR7225VXR solution meets our requirements due to its modular architecture."
The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS solution is part of the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN), an architecture based on international standards and industry best practices. The Cisco IP NGN is a converged network designed to deliver next-generation video, voice, data services while adding mobility to all services. The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS platform helps enable cable operators to deliver personalized IP-based services, and it empowers them to transform themselves into experience providers that can deliver the "connected life" to their customers.
"Enhancing our universal broadband router CMTS family is significant because it provides features and flexibility that give service providers like TDC Kabel TV and A+ a competitive edge," said Surya Panditi, Cisco vice president and general manager, optical technology and CMTS business unit. "The addition of the Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS platform demonstrates our commitment to deliver a range of options so that cable operators can optimize operating expenditures and capital expenditures as they transition to Internet Protocol-based infrastructures, all driven by the Cisco IP NGN architecture."
The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS solution addresses expanding service and operational needs and provides the following benefits for cable operators:
- High port density, which helps enable this entry-level cable line card to provide cable operators with up to 16 upstreams and 4 downstreams per two-rack-unit form factor;
- Compliance with DOCSIS 2.0, Euro-DOCSIS 2.0 and PacketCableTM 1.1 technology aids cable operators in maximizing their return on investment for converged services and in accelerating their deployment of advanced IP services; and
- Smaller deployments provide operational savings and lower capital expenditures.
The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS solution will be demonstrated during the IBC2007 in the Cisco booth at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre Center in Amsterdam, September 7-11.
Product Availability
The Cisco uBR7225VXR CMTS platform is scheduled to be available in the fourth quarter of 2007 to customers worldwide.
