STOCKHOLM, May 12, 2006 - In an awards ceremony last night as part of the annual Stockholm Challenge, RISEPAK was awarded the Cisco sponsored "Public Administration project" of 2006. The award was presented to Sarah Zaidi, project manager of RISEPAK by Sverker Hannervall, General Manager, Cisco Systems, Sweden.
The Stockholm Challenge is a well established global networking program for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) entrepreneurs for over ten years. It continues to be a leader in demonstrating how information technology can improve living conditions and increase economic growth in all parts of the world. One of the main features of the Stockholm Challenge is the ICT prize, the Stockholm Challenge Award, which has attracted over 5000 projects over the years.
RISEPAK is an earthquake relief coordination and accountability tool designed to collect, collate and display information about damage, access and relief for rural Pakistani citizens affected by the Oct. 2005 Earthquake on a public portal, setup within 12 days of the earthquake.
Earl Mardle, Chairman of the Jury announced the award. "In the aftermath of a disaster, relief aid must reach all affected areas in a timely and equitable manner. In Pakistan the earthquake affected many people over a wide area and many agencies were acting without coordination. This project has demonstrated the ability of ICT tools to respond rapidly and across a broad base to major disasters. It rapidly provided all relief agencies with basic information on the villages and regions that they would be working in, then provided the tools for the villages and NGO's to feed new information back into the system which organises and redistributes it to enable faster responses and better planning of resource allocations."
"Cisco is proud to be part of Stockholm Challenge in judging and presenting this award to RISEPAK in recognition of their innovative use of ICT in Public Administration. More nations around the world are recognising the impact that ICT can make in creating a Connected Community. This recognition is bringing down the walls of the digital divide by developing a skilled workforce, delivering essential services to ALL citizens and improving operational efficiencies in local government," stated Sverker Hannervall, General Manager, Cisco Systems.
