SEOUL, Korea, September 16, 2003 - C&M Communications Co., Ltd., (NYSE: C&M), one of the largest cable operators in Korea, and Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), announced today that C&M Communications is deploying Cisco® optical products and switches to satisfy the rapidly increasing demand, from its more than one million subscribers, for multimedia services such as Internet access, digital video broadcasting and videos on demand (VODs).
C&M owns many cable TV stations in Seoul and the Gyeonggi area, including Gangdong, Mapo and Songpa. Under the agreement, Cisco will supply Cisco ONS 15454 10G ML Series cards, Catalyst® 4507 switches, Catalyst 3550-24 switches and Catalyst 3550-12G switches.
"We are moving toward a comprehensive multimedia business aiming to offer Internet access and content services through the existing cable TV infrastructure. The Cisco solution will help us meet the requirements of increasing subscribers and their demands," said Ki-Hyun Sung, managing director and Chief of Strategic Officer, C&M. "Through this project, C&M can deliver converged services such as Internet access, digital video broadcasting and VOD to subscribers in the near future.
In late 2002, C&M launched its high-speed Internet service based on Cisco solutions. "The previous experience gave us strong confidence in the reliability and flexibility of Cisco solution," said Sung. "In particular, we decided to select Cisco ONS 15454 10G ML Series, because it has capacity of multiple 2.5-gigabit-per-second and 10-gigabit-per-second interfaces on one system and various TDM, optical and Ethernet interfaces. Moreover, it enables our services to be extended to other system operators."
"This supply agreement carries a great significance. With the convergence of broadcasting and communication becoming more than a trend, the supply of our solutions to C&M means securing a promising customer that takes a leading position in the digital cable TV market," said No Sung Park of Cisco Systems® Korea. "It is the first time to supply optical solutions to a leading player in the Digital Media Center (DMC) market. As such, setting a powerful precedence, it is expected to influence the other DMC service providers when selecting their DMC solutions."
The broadcasting-communications industry is quickly growing across Korea and worldwide, driven by the IT revolution. This swift change of the industrial environment sheds a highlight on the significance of cable TV industry. In particular, as the digitalized broadcasting and communication environment demands more advanced high-quality service beyond existing cable TV services, C&M plans to reach more subscribers by extending its services to other cable operators in the near future.
The digital cable TV architecture to be implemented by C&M was designed based on the Gigabit Ethernet interface, Cisco switches, and the Cisco ONS 15454 ML Series cards. The brand-new digital cable TV architecture will be able to aggregate digital video sources encoded by high-performing Cisco switches, and then transport them to remotely located system operators via ONS 15454 ML Series. The VOD service will be delivered on the same architecture.
