Cisco's support for key IT and telecoms event in Vietnam strengthens its knowledge transfer activities in country

HANOI, Vietnam - April 15, 2003 - Cisco Systems will be taking up Gold sponsorship at the Vietnam Information Technology and Communication (ITC) Forum 2003, which will be held from June 5 to 6 in Hanoi. Organized by the Vietnam Ministry of Posts & Telematics (MPT) and Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT), the event is the main highlight in the country and will shape the future of the development of IT and telecommunications industries.

Cisco's support for this important event is another step in its knowledge transfer activities in the country. Through its two Cisco Networking Academies in Hanoi and HoChiMinh City, Cisco has helped to train over 400 Cisco Certified Networking Associates (CCNAs) for key ministries in the country. Cisco is also a key technology provider to the VNPT.

"IT and telecommunications are important drivers of Vietnam's development. In order to develop a world-class communications infrastructure as well as train our people with the necessary skills, we need to learn from companies and countries who are leading in this field," said Dr Do Trung Ta, Minister of Vietnam Post & Telematics.

Cisco's presentation at the Vietnam ITC 2003 will focus on the development of the mobile Internet. The future of the mobile or cellular market lies in IP or Internet Protocol. Cisco is committed to driving future Mobile network evolution and convergence with the Internet and Enterprise Intranets, facilitating the transition to a New World Mobile infrastructure through the application of flexible, scalable and resilient technology agnostic IP networking. This enables Mobile Service Providers to become ASPs (Application Service Providers) and AIPs (Applications Infrastructure Providers), hosting web applications and delivering advanced, innovative Mobile Internet applications and services. This also provides rapid time to market, competitive differentiation and incremental revenue opportunities for mobile service providers.

Said Ha Huy Hao, managing director, Vietnam, Cisco Systems: "With the world's deepest and broadest understanding of packet technology, Cisco has an important role to play in helping carriers adapt to their changing market reality. The convergence of the mobile cellular market onto IP is an exciting development for service providers and consumers alike. For service providers, it presents a viable revenue source while for consumers benefit from the great new services that can be enabled on their mobile phones."

"Cisco is a company that was founded upon, and continues to operate upon, the basic belief that customer satisfaction is our primary focus. We work very closely with our service provider customers to fully understand their needs and plans, and then design our products and services to address their needs. Globally, we are making a major investment in the service provider sector - over US$10 billion in the next five years - because we believe in our shared destiny," he added.
