Cisco the first and only vendor in India with TEC approval on its IP-based PBX solution

NEW DELHI, India - April 9, 2003 - Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, announced today that it has shipped 20,000 IP Phones to customers in India. Cisco's leadership in the Indian IP Telephony space is driven by the large scale adoption of its IP-PBX solutions by Indian enterprise & service provider customers.

Cisco remains the first and only vendor to have got an approval from the Telecommunications Engineering Center (TEC) of the Department of Telecommunications in September 2001 for its IP-based PBX solutions in India. The Cisco solution has an Interface Approval Certificate from the TEC that makes it legal for the approved IP-based products from Cisco to be connected directly to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) / Mahanagar Telephone Limited (MTNL) networks to carry voice traffic from the internal enterprise PABX to anywhere in the world on the PSTN.

The announcement of the deployment of 20,000 IP Phones in India comes after the announcement that Cisco has shipped more than 1 million IP Phones across the world.

Speaking about Cisco's success in the IP Telephony space in India, Manoj Chugh, President - India & SAARC, Cisco Systems said, "Cisco bet early on IP being the future of voice communications. We have benefited greatly from being the pioneers of this technology in India - and globally. Traditional vendors of the solution are, only now, getting into IP-based voice communications space. Cisco has used this early mover advantage to drive home our advantage through investing in R&D, growing the market as well as offering solutions customized for customer's communication needs."

IP-based solution will enable companies to deploy key services such as video conferencing, collaboration and other value-added options such as directory integration, XML integration, application prioritizing calls received, calling party name and number, calls received, missed calls and dialed calls, extension mobility etc. - in an easy-to-program and easy-to-use platform, at a touch. This solution is backed up with ease to install and configure, and standard CAT-5 LAN cabling. IP-PBX is an open-standards solution, which means that enterprises need not be tied down to one vendor for application integration to the solution.

Cisco has an end-to-end IP-based, multiple-box PBX solution with various scalability options comprising of combinations using AS5300, Catalyst 6500, Cisco 3600, Catalyst 2900XL, integrated with powerful Cisco Call Manager software, Cisco IP IVR (Interactive Voice Response), Cisco IP AA (Automated Attendant) and the Cisco range of IP Phones. With due recognition of IP based Solutions, TEC ensures the acceptance and interconnectivity of this new world technology to BSNL and MTNL networks.
