SAN JOSE, Calif., March 24, 2003 - SDN Communications and Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that SDN is enhancing its optical network with solutions from the Cisco® Complete Optical Multiservice Edge and Transport (COMET) portfolio. Using the Cisco ONS 15600 Multiservice Switching Platform (MSSP), SDN consolidates equipment into one optical layer, significantly improving efficiency, provisioning, troubleshooting and reliability. The Cisco ONS 15600 also enables SDN Communications to consolidate its existing OC-48 interfaces with wholesale customers and eliminate costly DS-3 cross-connects. This improvement in service density translates to scalability for future growth opportunities.
"The ONS 15600 drastically improves the efficiency of our network. We anticipate greater uptime and at least a 75-percent increase in productivity from a provisioning standpoint," said Brett Burgett, director of network planning and operations, SDN Communications. "Our aggressive installation schedule, business-to-business customer focus, and continued investment in the network are strategic objectives that set us apart."
The SDN Communications network includes 5,000 miles of fiber-optic cable in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) rings connect into the Cisco ONS 15600, consolidating equipment and reducing electrical connections. With the Cisco optical solution, SDN simplifies its network and saves space in its central office. Provisioning time is also greatly reduced because technicians can now key in a cross-connect without additional cabling or manual circuit installations. Using a nearly all-optical network, SDN maximizes the redundancy and reliability of its SONET infrastructure.
"SDN Communications is taking full advantage of the primary features of the ONS 15600 to achieve greater operations and capital-expense savings and improve profitability," said Ron Martin, vice president and general manager, Optical Networking Group, Cisco Systems. "Continuing to add new technology to increase the performance of the network helps SDN respond to changing customer demands more quickly and with greater flexibility."
The SDN Communications network also includes metro rings supported by other Cisco COMET products including the Cisco ONS 15454 and ONS 15327 multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs). SDN uses the Cisco MSPPs to deliver SONET-based time-division multiplexing (TDM) services and metro Ethernet services to its customers. The Cisco COMET product line offers maximum service velocity, density, variety, and capacity, building the foundation to accelerate IP and optical networking.
