BEIJING, P.R. China, February 25, 2003 - Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced that China Telecom has deployed Cisco's networking equipment and solutions at the data access laboratory of its Beijing Research Institute. Cisco technology enabled the institute to build a reliable and flexible network for the testing of China Telecom's emerging technology and telecommunications services.

China Telecom has set up research centers in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in order to accelerate the development of new technologies and business applications. The Beijing data access lab will also be operated to help China Telecom adapt industry-leading services being deployed on a global basis to the Chinese market.
Cisco provided high-end 12410 and 7600 series routers to the Beijing data access lab, which aims to establish a stable networking environment for IP (Internet Protocol) and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) data testing. The data access lab will also conduct research programs on broadband MAN (metropolitan-area network), broadband Internet access, network access and monitoring, IP VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology, IP security and development of IP version 6 solutions.
