TORONTO, November 7, 2002 - McMillan Binch LLP announced today that it has launched a Wireless LAN Pilot Project at its Toronto headquarters, freeing lawyers to use laptops anywhere in their offices without plugging in.

"This is a significant leap forward for McMillan Binch," said Graham Scott, the firm's Managing Partner. Mr. Scott himself has signed on to the project and will be carrying one of the wireless notebooks. "We were the first law firm on the Internet with our web site," said Mr. Scott, "and we are comfortable today being on the cutting edge again."

The goal of this Project is to have McMillan Binch lawyers be fully mobile and connected within the office -- and eventually within a larger downtown wireless campus. For example, if a lawyer attends a meeting in a boardroom or another lawyer's office but needs to stay connected to e-mail or complete research on the Internet or Intranet, it will be as simple as carrying his or her notebook computer from one meeting to the next.

"Other firms may have wireless access points but McMillan Binch expects to be the first legal professional service business in Toronto with a firm wide wireless network solution," Mr. Scott added.

George J. Atis, a partner and Chair of the firm's technology and new media practice group (called The KNOWlaw(TM) Group -- for "KNOWledge-based" businesses) said the Wireless Project is "just one of the strategic things that we are doing to plan for the future."

"Apart from the advisory and transaction work we do in our tech group, we are also the firm's legal R&D lab for assessing new technology and its application to improving the client-lawyer relationship and our overall efficiency," Mr. Atis added.

"This project has significant, wide application potential," said Mr. Atis. "If Bay Street can get its act together soon and establish a wireless network in the downtown core -- let's say a 10 KM radius of high-speed coverage -- we should be able to walk across the street to another law firm or to our clients' offices or to court and remain fully connected to our e-mail and data in real time, without looking to 'dial-up' from somewhere."

The firm's Director of IT, Chris Duncan said, "the firm was careful to research more than one solution and, in particular, the security aspects -- because in our business, data security is everything. Our Pilot Project is working smoothly, and we owe it to our internal tech team and our tech partners, Cisco Systems (hardware and software) and GE Capital IT Solutions (design and implementation)."
