SAN JOSE, Calif., September 23, 2002 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) of Harris County, Texas, has purchased optical networking solutions from the Cisco Complete Optical Multiservice Edge and Transport (COMET) product portfolio, for simple, easy, and reliable management of IP-based voice, video, and data services. METRO, the transit agency serving the Houston metropolitan area, recently deployed the industry-leading Cisco ONS 15454 SONET Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) in its OC-48 SONET ring, coupled with Cisco Dynamic Packet Transport/Resilient Packet Ring (DPT/RPR) technology and Cisco 7200 Series Internet routers. The Cisco ONS 15454 is a key part of METRO's intelligent optical network, efficiently aggregating multiservice network traffic. The Cisco ONS 15454 delivers bandwidth scalability in a low-cost, small size. Cisco DPT/RPR technology simplifies data network topology and boosts network scalability and performance.
METRO provides public transportation in a 1,285-square-mile region and is building a new 7.5-mile light-rail line. It is also a partner in Houston TranStar, the transportation and emergency-response headquarters for the region.
"As the organization and its services grow, METRO strives to deploy the latest technology that will help meet its overall goal of providing the safest, highest quality transportation solutions for the Houston area," said Shirley A. DeLibero, president and CEO at Houston METRO. "Cisco's optical solution will consolidate several networks into one metro-area network."
The Cisco COMET portfolio provides high-capacity voice, data, and storage networking using fiber and optical technologies to build resilient metro infrastructures. This allows enterprise organizations to access and transport their mission-critical applications and transactional data with industry-leading security, as part of their operations and e-business strategies.
