SAN JOSE, Calif., June 5, 2002 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today set a cable industry milestone by shipping the company's 250,000th upstream cable modem termination system (CMTS) port. Cisco established its leadership position in 1998 by introducing the uBR7200 Series, the industry's first DOCSIS-enabled CMTS. Since then, it has helped the cable industry grow to an estimated 10 million broadband subscribers worldwide.

Over the last four years, the success of the cable industry in developing a broadband business can be attributed to building an intelligent IP network foundation that is capable of expanding to meet market demand. Cisco and its uBR CMTS router family have been instrumental in this process and continue to lead the way in support of advanced services and technologies such as VoIP, Open Access, VPNs, PacketCable and video distribution over IP architectures.

"By taking high-speed data service from the experimental stage to full-scale market deployment in such a short time, Cisco continues to perform a valuable service to the cable industry," said Michael Harris, President of Kinetic Strategies. " Prior to the introduction of Cisco's CMTS router and the adoption of the DOCSIS standard, it took cable operators five years to reach 100,000 cable modems deployed worldwide. Cisco's contribution to the DOCSIS market has helped the industry grow to over 10 million modems deployed worldwide in about 3 years."

The true benefits of cable's broadband foundation are yet to be realized. With its inherent intelligence, flexibility, and powerful design, the uBR7246VXR, an upgradeable version of the original uBR7246 CMTS, recently became DOCSIS 1.1 qualified along with it larger family member, the uBR10012 CMTS router. In addition, at the upcoming SCTE Cable-Tec expo, June 5-7, 2002, Cisco will be presenting a technology demo featuring DOCSIS 2.0 A-TDMA functionality on the uBR10012 providing further evidence of the flexibility and power of the Cisco uBR platform.

"The CMTS is considered the most strategic device that cable operators will put in their IP network," said Carson Chen, vice president and general manager of the Cable Business Unit at Cisco. "With the broadband industry changing so quickly, the need for additional intelligence and end-to-end seamless connectivity across the cable and communication infrastructure becomes increasingly critical. With the successful deployment of over 250,000 ports, Cisco is ready and able to help MSOs chart a successful course."
