HOUSTON, March 6, 2002 - Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced the Compaq Wireless Enterprise Framework, the next generation of real-time wireless enterprise infrastructure solutions that offer customers all the key components they need to wirelessly enable their enterprise applications using a single, integrated approach. By combining 'Best of Breed' components with an innovative method of designing and implementing enterprise wireless solutions, Compaq is again driving the market toward industry standards and the significant customer benefits this approach makes possible.

The Wireless Enterprise Framework is Compaq's wireless application gateway and development solution for integrating multiple enterprise applications. A significant new extension of the company's enterprise mobility strategy, it provides enterprise customers with a viable wireless architecture and roadmap that will increase productivity, customer satisfaction and revenues; provide higher performance; and reduce costs. The Wireless Enterprise Framework leverages the consultancy and integration skills of Compaq's Global Services organization to give customers a wireless mobility strategy that meets current and future business needs.

The Wireless Enterprise Framework also addresses a key concern for enterprise customers who want to implement mobile solutions: in order to verify their technology choices and ROI predictions, many companies want to run a pilot program before rolling out a complete installation. Compaq now offers a pilot solution that integrates all the server hardware, software, handheld devices and consulting and support services that a company needs to wirelessly enable its mobile workforce—at one-fourth the cost and in one-fourth the time of the nearest competing, but inferior, offers.

"No other company can wirelessly mobilize an enterprise to return-on-investment faster than Compaq," said Jerry Meerkatz, vice president and general manager, Compaq Enterprise Mobility Solutions.

"Customers tell us they need a secure, robust, end-to-end wireless mobility strategy and infrastructure delivered with a full package of services. The Wireless Enterprise Framework can be deployed very quickly—and at a fraction of the typical cost. This is far and away the best approach for a business to wirelessly extend its key enterprise applications to mobile professionals," Meerkatz added.

Key Enterprise Applications Available Anytime, Anywhere

The Wireless Enterprise Framework ensures that a company's mobile professionals will have seamless, anytime, anywhere access to applications such as their e-mail and calendar, enterprise database, supply chain management (SCM), sales force automation (SFA), field service automation (FSA) and customer relationship management (CRM), as well as other intranet applications and the Internet itself.

Compaq is unique in its ability to swiftly mobilize an enterprise to dramatically improve their return-on-investment (ROI), drawing from its core strengths ranging from wireless access devices to Compaq's mission-critical servers, software, global integration services and worldwide telecom carrier wireless infrastructure expertise. The Enterprise Mobility Solutions (EMS) group creates these repeatable, secure, supported wireless mobility solutions and delivers them globally to enterprise customers who are ready to embrace the productivity of "untethered" access to enterprise information, e-mail and the Internet.

"Compaq's new mobility framework addresses enterprise customers' toughest questions about cost, deployment and time to benefit. By packaging the right components and providing a fixed-price pilot, Compaq is raising the bar for all enterprise-focused mobile/wireless solution providers," said Warren Wilson, Practice Director, Mobile and Wireless Solutions, Summit Strategies Inc.

Compaq has designed and implemented wireless environments for companies such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and British Airways.

New Wireless Enterprise Framework Delivers Fast ROI

The Wireless Enterprise Framework can dramatically accelerate deployment, lower costs and raise ROI for wireless mobility. Business benefits include revenue enhancement through increased customer satisfaction and increased speed to market with new product and service offerings, as well as cost reductions such as reduced sales cycle time and decreased cost per sales and service call.

Traditional approaches to deployment of pilot mobility solutions can cost more than $1,000,000 and require 12-16 weeks at a minimum. With the Compaq Wireless Enterprise Framework, costs can be less than $300,000 and time-to-mobility pilot readiness in less than four weeks.

Once the test results are evaluated, the pilot solution is modified to address the test results, as necessary, to then become the basis for a fully deployed live mobility production system.

Connecting to Enterprise Applications Delivers Wireless Benefits

Compaq's long-standing, strategic relationships with the market leaders in field and service automation, customer relationship management and database management spurred the development of the Wireless Enterprise Framework. In addition, Compaq has worked closely with leading technology providers to extend wireless access to these enterprise applications. The solutions run on industry-standard Compaq ProLiant servers running Windows, specifically the ProLiant DL580 Enterprise server and the ProLiant DL360. The Wireless Enterprise Framework includes 50-user licenses for both.

It also includes 50 of the award-winning Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs, with their brilliant color screens, vast memory capacity and long battery life. Expansion Packs and wireless PC cards are also included.

Finally, as part of the package, Compaq Global Services provides professional services for installation, configuration, and hardware/software support. Following the pilot phase, companies may keep the hardware and extend the software licenses to begin deployment on their own timetable with Compaq Global Services.

The Wireless Enterprise Framework joins an extensive portfolio of other Compaq wireless mobility solutions and programs already in place, including:

  • Mobilized Enterprise Applications, such as SFA and FSA, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Database and mobile messaging;
  • Mobilized Vertical Industry Applications, such as financial services, physician mobility, manufacturing, transportation, retail and pharmaceutical;
  • Strategic alliances with companies such as Cisco Systems, which enable Compaq Global Services to integrate the best applications, products, and services for wireless local area networking (WLAN) solutions; and
  • Wireless Local Area Networking, which enables mobile workers to extend network coverage and access information in local environments or public "hot spots."
