KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 11, 2002 - Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS) today announced that it has signed a multiyear, multimillion dollar agreement with Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), the largest private research university in Ohio, to significantly upgrade its communications network infrastructure.
CWRU, based in Cleveland, will turn to Sprint, using infrastructure supplied by Cisco Systems, to build one of the fastest Local Area Networks (LAN) in the world. The CWRU agreement is the first significant Sprint-Cisco collaborative effort resulting from the companies' strategic relationship announced in December 2001.
"Case Western Reserve University has built a reputation for innovation and quality use of cutting edge technology, and we need to work very closely with communications companies that share those values," said CWRU president James W. Wagner. "Sprint, working with Cisco, designed a set of solutions that will help us continue to be one of the nation's leading independent research universities. Sprint and Cisco understood both our technology needs and those of our business, and we look forward to building upon our relationship with them in the future."
Beginning with the internationally acclaimed Weatherhead School of Management's Peter B. Lewis Building, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, CWRU will deploy a Cisco switched Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop solution across the entire university allowing students, faculty and staff high-speed access to the university's LAN from every building on CWRU's campus. The university will also turn to Sprint for a Cisco Aironet Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) wireless data network, which enhances the wired network by providing convenient access to network resources for people carrying portable computers and handheld devices.
"CWRU is taking a visionary approach to expanding the resources of its students, staff and faculty through powerful technology and communications services," said Ralph Hodge, president, Sprint Business and Wholesale Markets. "We are honored to be playing such a key role in this process and that the university has placed its trust in Sprint's ability to ensure its success."
"With high speed and wireless Ethernet connectivity to their desktops, CWRU students, faculty and administrators will dramatically enhance their ability to communicate quickly any time, anywhere on campus, " said Doug Dennerline, senior vice president of Enterprise U.S. sales at Cisco. "We are very pleased to expand our longstanding relationship with CWRU by managing and supporting its voice, video, wireless and integrated services on one very fast network."
