REDWOOD CITY, Calif., September 5, 2001 - Openwave Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communications infrastructure software and applications, today announced immediate availability of version 3.0 of the Openwave Unified Messaging solution. This third generation solution is a critical component of Openwave's broad Messaging Services strategy. Based on IP industry standards, Openwave's Messaging Services enable communication service providers (CSPs) to deliver branded and customized messaging services tailored to specific customer segments with a single solution.

"Openwave Unified Messaging 3.0 is a key milestone in our strategy to provide a broad set of Messaging Services to our customers," said Marc Linden, group vice president and general manager at Openwave. "Openwave's Unified Messaging delivers a compelling experience to the end user, allowing them to finally realise the full potential of true unification-a crucial benefit for CSPs who must win in messaging services to retain customers in the Internet world."

With Unified Messaging 3.0, subscribers have the ability to access voice, fax and email messages from a single mailbox using a wireline or wireless phone, or Internet-enabled mobile phone or PC. Openwave's solution offers subscribers an easy to use application with a consistent user interface and fully integrated PIM. Openwave Unified Messaging enables "Voicemail Anywhere", allowing users to forward voice messages to anyone with an email address. In addition, users can "Reply-by-Voice" to any message, and can personalize the service so that they will be notified of urgent emails or voice messages via PC, telephone, or pager.

By allowing a CSP to quickly deploy customized and branded services, Openwave's VoiceXML-based Unified Messaging application enables CSP's to remain central to the subscriber relationship and offers an opportunity to increase revenue and reduce churn. Openwave's Unified Messaging offers CSPs a cost-efficient solution designed to use industry standard components for operational simplicity, and elimination of redundancy. Openwave's Unified Messaging is also designed to work with Cisco's AS5300 voice gateway and AS5350 and AS5400 universal gateways.

The Openwave Unified Messaging solution is based on Openwave's proven IP messaging infrastructure, which currently has more than 180 million licensed seats. Customers using Openwave Unified Messaging include ZoomTown, wholly owned Internet broadband subsidiary of Broadwing Inc; BT Genie and iBasis.

Openwave's Messaging Services, as well as each product individually, are designed to give CSPs the flexibility to offer subscribers a more compelling, easy-to-use, and personalized communications experience. All of Openwave's Messaging Services are built on an IP standards-based architecture with shared common elements and are designed to meet the needs of CSP's current and next generation messaging needs. Openwave's Messaging Services include generally available products: Unified Messaging, Email, Mobile Email; as well as Instant Messaging and Multimedia Messaging, which are expected to be available in the future.
