HONG KONG -- 5 September 2001 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, has been awarded a contract valued at more than HK$50 million from New T&T, Hong Kong's fastest-growing fixed telecommunications network services (FTNS) operator, to provide a high-performance networking infrastructure for New T&T's iDATACENTRE.

The new Cisco-powered networking infrastructure will allow New T&T to extend its Internet Infrastructure Provider (IIP) capabilities and provide a comprehensive array of one-stop-shop solutions to business enterprises that cater to today's fast growing Internet-based business community.

"Working with Cisco, New T&T now offers a total IIP solution that enables business enterprises to streamline their workflow, minimise overheads, lower operational costs and focus on their core businesses -- the key to their overall success -- rather than on hardware and software maintenance. This coincides with our Building e-Connections strategy, which is contingent upon the utilisation of state-of-the-art networking equipment offered by our trusted vendor, Cisco," said Mr. Vincent Ma, Vice President, Commercial of New T&T.

iDATACENTRE's network uses the next generation Cisco 12000 Internet Routers as the foundation of its IP backbone. Other Cisco products and solutions deployed include the award-winning Catalyst line of switches, service load balancing equipment and Cisco's secure Intrusion Detection System (IDS), which is designed to detect, report and terminate unauthorised activity in real-time.

"We are pleased to be working with New T&T to implement its IP backbone network using our next-generation Internet routers," said Mr. Frankie Sum, Managing Director of Cisco Systems (Hong Kong). "Cisco's sophisticated networking infrastructure serves as the cornerstone of New T&T's premium quality Internet data centres."

The flagship Cisco 12000 series Internet Routers are based on a unique distributed architecture that delivers the IP+Optical networking foundation and service building blocks to accelerate the evolution of the Internet. The Cisco 12000 family delivers the highest level of scalability and performance, and investment protection available today. The Cisco 12000 Internet Routers are also the only systems capable of guaranteeing high priority packet delivery, which is critical to meet customers' increasing need for delivery of premium IP based services.

iDATACENTRE's launch is a key element in New T&T's aggressive expansion of its IIP capabilities to provide total Internet infrastructure solutions to businesses ranging from multi-national corporations to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It will be particularly welcomed by telecom and Internet service providers. IIP infrastructure includes carrier-grade Internet data centre services, extensive broadband coverage, end-to-end managed international connectivity and high-quality international IP access.

"The launch of the iDATACENTRE marks another important milestone in the ongoing expansion of our Internet infrastructure capabilities, and we are proud that it will meet and exceed the requirements of the next generation Internet-oriented and e-Commerce business community," added Mr. Ma.

The new iDATACENTRE will offer a floor area of 20,000 square feet to provide a full range of managed services including co-location, performance-based Web hosting and mission-critical website monitoring. It will also play a key role in carrying out e-business applications more securely and reliably while offering enterprise IT outsourcing, system integration, and e-solution services.

This next-generation IIP solution addresses the versatile requirements of today's business community. Customised and flexible packages are also available to suit individual customer's requirements like the bundling of various products including leased lines as well as local and international connectivity.

New T&T has invested over HK$50 million in this carrier-grade iDATACENTRE which will be operated under the most stringent conditions, offering highly reliable facilities such as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a backup diesel electricity generator in addition to the battery backup, and others. iDATACENTRE also offers customers open access to other FTNS fixed-lines, in contrast to other telecom operators that only offer access to data centres via their own fixed lines.
