SINGAPORE -- 14 June 2001 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., today announced Mobile Office Network (MNET), a solution that provides Voice over IP (VoIP) connectivity over standard global system for mobile communications (GSM) handsets. The Cisco MNET solution will be demonstrated at Solutions Showcase 2001, Cisco's technology event for customers and partners, from June 28 to 29 at the Raffles City Convention Centre.

The Cisco MNET solution meets the needs of corporations today, by providing a private environment for building wireless applications, and leveraging tradition GSM technology. By leveraging a standard GSM handset, the same phone (and phone number) can be used inside the office as a private extension or outside as a public mobile phone. The Cisco MNET solution also allows service providers and enterprises to manage private airtime costs and tailored professional applications to meet the growing needs of today's subscribers. Cisco MNET can be configured as a stand-alone or integrated into existing infrastructure through a Cisco gateway (including a PBX, the PLMN, or PSTN), and can allow employees to seamlessly roam to a local or global public network.

"Cisco MNET is the first wireless office solution using Internet Protocol (IP) in a 3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) 2000 architecture. This solution provides corporations today with a private tailored wireless office solution which they can use for legacy services or next generation wireless data services," said Matt Daly, Cisco Systems Wireless Solutions Manager for Asia Pacific.

Cisco Systems is currently deploying the MNet solution with service providers in UK, Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific.

The essence of Cisco MNET is the ability to use standard GSM handsets on a private corporate IP network. This is accomplished with the revolutionary GSM to IP Gateways (GP10). No longer do in-building wireless networks have to share resources with the public network or require proprietary, expensive interfaces in order to provide virtual private network (VPN) services. Standard 10/100Base-T interconnections are all that is required to interconnect to a secure 100 per cent private Cisco MNET system.
