SAN JOSE, Calif. - June 5, 2001 - Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today unveiled the Cisco 7400, a high performance, compact (one rack-unit high) application specific router offering multiple combinations of rich Internet Protocol (IP) services to build customized networking applications.
The latest solution in Cisco's Next Generation Internet Router family, the Cisco 7400 integrates scalable performance with industry-leading port density, optimizing service provider and enterprise applications for a wide variety of network configurations and environments. Customers can now take advantage of high-performance network-layer switching and services including security, Quality of Service (QoS) and traffic management at more locations across the network.
"Enterprise and service provider customers drive the need for products that reduce operational and management costs while increasing revenue opportunities," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder at Infonetics Research. "The Cisco 7400 addresses these market needs, providing scalability, hardware-accelerated services and efficient use of rack space by integrating functions previously performed by combinations of other products."
Innovative Packaging Solutions
The Cisco 7400 offers the ability to fully customize hardware and IP services options that deliver optimal performance for all intended applications. Fully integrated solutions are available for the following applications:- Broadband Services Aggregation: As a broadband subscriber aggregation solution, the Cisco 7400 is capable of handling up to 8,000 subscribers in a unit, and has the ability to support up to 320,000 subscribers in a rack. The Cisco 7400 is ideal for services aggregation to support users utilizing a variety of media including DSL, wireless, cable, ISDN and leased-line services. And with its stackability and high-availability features, the Cisco 7400 gives customers the flexibility to add units incrementally as their networks grow, thus providing high investment protection.
- Customer Premises Equipment (CPE): The Cisco 7400's high-performance IP services delivery features make it a premier CPE solution, offering customers the ability to customize their network performance for services such as security, traffic engineering and multiprotocol label switching (MPLS). The Cisco 7400 takes advantage of Cisco's patented Parallel eXpress Forwarding (PXF) network processor to deliver these rich IP services at line-rate for DS3 to OC3 speeds. These integrated services and hardware features make the Cisco 7400 an ideal "Internet Gateway" and an integral part of Cisco AVVID, the Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data.
Customers utilizing the Cisco 7400 will also benefit from its cost effective Gigabit Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2-7 network services as well as its flexible, 40-interface WAN connectivity options. In addition, an HTML-based element management tool for the Cisco 7400 integrates with the Cisco Element Manager Framework (CEMF) offering simplified configuration and management of the system.
Pricing, Availability and Other Information
List price for the Cisco 7400 starts at $19,000. It will be available in June.
