New Data Encapsulation Features Simplify Network Configuration and Management

SAN JOSE, Calif. - March 6, 2001 - Continuing its program to integrate Layer 3 and ATM technologies in the industry-leading Catalyst 8500 series Layer 3-enhanced ATM platforms, Cisco Systems, Inc. today introduced the ATM Router Module (ARM) II. Like its predecessor, the ARM II is a network engine that allows customers to build networks that can move high-speed traffic at wire speed between Layer 3 (IP, for example) and ATM interfaces on a single platform.

Key among the set of new features in the ARM II is support for more industry-standard data encapsulation techniques. Specifically, the ARM II offers switched virtual circuit (SVC) support for RFC 1483, multiprotocol encapsulation over ATM, and support for RFC 1577, commonly referred to as "classical IP over ATM". These are both software-based enhancements that work together to significantly simplify network configuration and management. In essence, these features eliminate the need for the customer to specify destination paths within and among networks, thereby making the networks easier to grow while increasing their stability and availability.

"The increasing volume of Layer 3 IP traffic in today's enterprise and service provider networks requires more efficient internetworking and operation efficiencies in these mixed Layer 3 and ATM environments," said Carl Engineer, Director of Marketing at the Metro. "By simplifying the network design, configuration and management processes across both technologies, ARM II makes it possible for customers to build larger, more scalable networks faster and at substantial cost savings."

Other noteworthy features in the ARM II are the integration of access control lists (ACL) with a total capacity for up to 256,000 routing table entries. Previously, both these features were only available on other Catalyst 8540 MSR modules, for example, the 2-port Gigabit Ethernet Module, but not on the ARM itself. Integrating ACL onto the ARM II provides security features at the point where data first enter the network. The support for up to 256,000 routing table entries adds room for future applications and network services and ensures scalability for the network designer.

Ongoing enhancements and programs at Cisco will introduce mutiprotocol label switching (MPLS)/virtual private network (VPN) solutions, interworking of IP class of service (CoS) with ATM quality of service (QoS), and enhanced voice capabilities. Cisco will also announce programs and customers relying on managed network services for their Layer 3 enhanced ATM networking needs.

"The natural progression for enterprises who deploy Layer 3 enhanced ATM networks will be to rely increasingly on managed network services (MNS)," said Joel Conover, analyst at Current Analysis. "Solutions such as the Catalyst 8500 series platforms will have very prominent roles in these MNS environments and will result in very significant business opportunities for service providers."

Pricing and availability

The ARM II costs $24,995 per module and is available now.
