AMSTERDAM, February 14, 2001 - Versatel Telecom International NV, today announced that it has tested, fine-tuned and implemented the Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) technology of Cisco Systems for its high-speed IP backbone network. The DPT technology forms a scalable and cost-efficient solution to provide IP (Internet) services over Versatel's own fiber optic network, without having to use the SDH and ATM layers and equipment in its network. The technology is designed to leverage Versatel's fiber optic infrastructure by offering high quality data transport at speeds up to 2.5 Gbit/s.

"Anticipating on the strong growth in our IP traffic, we needed to expand the capacity of our SDH-based network in order to keep up with the changing needs and growth of our customers," said Aad Beekhuis, Chief Operating Officer of Versatel. "By deploying Cisco's DPT, we were not only able to offload traffic from our SDH circuits and ATM network but we now have the ability to scale our network much more easily and cost-effectively. Furthermore this network is ready to serve more value-added services, such as Voice over IP and IP VPN virtual private networks."

Cisco's DPT is a resilient packet ring technology that combines the intelligence of IP routing with the bandwidth efficiencies of optical rings. Designed primarily for metropolitan area networks, DPT delivers scalable Internet service, reliable IP-aware optical transport, and simplified network operations. In addition to DPT, Versatel also selected Cisco 12000 series Internet routers for the build-out of its backbone network. Versatel's IP network is fully operational in the Benelux markets.

"Versatel recognized early that by investing in DPT today they can build a network flexible enough to meet tomorrow's opportunities because of the ease and cost-effectiveness of upgrading a DPT-based solution," said Graeme Fraser, vice president and general manager, Metro IP Access Business Unit, Cisco Systems. "We are very pleased to partner with such a forward-looking service provider."
