KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- 26 February 2001 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, will be showcasing the latest in Internet and networking innovations at APRICOT 2001 in Kuala Lumpur, the Asia Pacific region's premier Internet event where the movers and shakers in the industry gather to discuss policies as well as get updates and training on next-generation internetworking technologies.

As one of the pioneers of APRICOT in 1996, Cisco Systems continues its commitment to the event with Platinum sponsorship this year, a wireless network to enable delegates to access the event web site as well as the Internet and a strong line-up of some of the world's leading engineering talent such as Dr Philip Smith, Charles Mujie, Duncan Rogerson, C.A. Nambi, Ronald Yap, Darren Paterson and Njauw Tjie Seng, who will lead and participate in the conferences, tutorials and workshops including the APRICOT Network Training Workshop.

Next-generation Internetworking

The centerpiece of Cisco's technology showcase is its end-to-end IP+Optical strategy, which is designed to enable service providers to radically change the economics of delivering Internet business solutions and high-bandwidth consumer applications. By combining the intelligence of IP with the capacity of Optical technologies, Cisco is helping service providers to achieve service velocity - provision new services and enter new markets faster; and radical economics - delivering higher-value services at a fraction of the cost. Cisco's range of IP+Optical solutions include the recently announced Cisco 12400 series Internet routers, Cisco ONS 15327 metro edge optical transport platform, and the Cisco 7600 Optical Services Router (OSR), a high-performance router for service providers that delivers industry-leading IP services at optical speeds.

"The Internet is increasingly becoming the world's communications infrastructure, and Cisco is uniquely positioned to deliver the building blocks that will accelerate this transformation. Technologies such as IP+Optical, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT), Voice over IP (VoIP) and Multiprotocol Label Switching and Multiprotocol Lambda Switching (MPLS) will all play crucial roles in Internet development and Cisco is leading the way in all of them," said Dr Philip Smith, Consulting Engineer for Internet Architectures, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, Cisco Systems.

Wireless Networking

Delegates at APRICOT 2001 will also get a first-hand experience of Cisco's wireless networking technologies through the Cisco-sponsored Wireless Instant Internet Access Program (http://www.apricot2001.com/programme/wireless.html). With Cisco Aironet 340 series Access Points strategically located throughout the Putra World Trade Center, delegates can loan a Cisco Aironet PCMCIA card and access both the APRICOT event web site and the Internet.

The Cisco Aironet 340 series of wireless LAN products provide a standards-based, field proven, high-speed wireless networking solution for both in-building and building-to-building WLAN applications. The Cisco Aironet 340 series products are easy to manage and deliver a complete solution to customers who require the mobility, flexibility, and freedom of a WLAN to complement or replace a wired LAN.

"APRICOT is a big shot in the arm for the Malaysian Internet community and is a testament of the government's support for the development of the Information Superhighway in the country," said En. Shaifubahrim Saleh, Managing Director for Cisco Systems in Malaysia. "Cisco Systems is already intrinsically tied into that development, having built key network backbones for the country including MIMOS' SuperJaring. Our support for APRICOT 2001 strengthens that commitment."
