Global Broadband Roaming, a Cisco Internet Mobile Office solution, enables a global broadband network footprint, which allows access from different service provider networks while roaming, as well as integrated billing

COMDEX, Las Vegas - November 13, 2000 - Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and iPass Inc., the premier provider of global remote Internet access services, today announced Global Broadband Roaming-the industry's first broadband roaming service that gives business travelers simplified, high-speed and secure remote access to their corporate networks. Both companies are working together to enable a global broadband network that allows service providers to provide service outside their service area and a single, integrated bill-whether their mobile employees use the service from work, home or on the road. Global Broadband Roaming is a key component of the Cisco Internet Mobile Office initiative also announced today. (Please refer to press release entitled "Cisco Systems Announces 'Cisco Internet Mobile Office' for Business Professionals on the Move.")

Cisco and iPass, a new Cisco New World Ecosystem company, are leading the way to make broadband as ubiquitous as dial-up Internet access. Global Broadband Roaming takes remote access to the next level. The ability for business travelers to simply plug into or connect through digital subscriber line (DSL), cable, Ethernet, fixed-wireless and wireless LAN connections to gain high-speed access to critical business applications will revolutionize remote access.

"There is a natural synergy between iPass and Cisco," said Matthew Kovar of Yankee Group. "They both share the same clarity of vision of seeing broadband roaming as the next frontier of global remote access to critical business applications. The two companies are at the forefront of moving forward with this vision by developing and deploying a global broadband roaming solution for the mobile executive."

iPass has already executed Global Broadband Roaming agreements with service providers inter-touch, Nomad Networks and MobileStar, and is continuing its efforts to expand the reach and availability of the broadband roaming service by adding additional service providers on an ongoing basis.

High-speed access is be being deployed at Cisco Internet Mobile Office "hotspots" such as airports, hotels, convention centers, planes and other locations frequented by business travelers. The services are being deployed in these locations through agreements between hotspot facility operators and broadband Internet service providers (ISPs). iPass will aggregate hotspot broadband access through agreements with providers and layer in authentication and settlement capabilities. Cisco end-to-end broadband technologies, VPN and service selection products, coupled with iPass' global network, IP settlement system and relationships with 800 ISPs worldwide, will enable service providers to rapidly roll out secure broadband roaming services to corporate customers.

Once a user accesses the Global Roaming Roaming service at a hotspot location, the integrated Cisco VPN and iPassConnect client software is automatically launched, which then authenticates the user before providing a secure connection to Global Broadband Roaming participating service provider networks. This same client will enable users to access dial-up, integrated service digital network (ISDN) and broadband point of presence (POPs) throughout the world, creating a complete remote-access solution for enterprises.

"Just as iPass developed and delivered a dial-up solution for business travelers and remote offices that need to access corporate networks, we will now extend the power of our secure global network to multi-megabits and beyond. We are well prepared to fully utilize our proprietary and unique authentication and settlement technology to make broadband access available any time from anywhere," said Michael Mansouri, iPass chairman and CEO.

"Global Broadband Roaming allows service providers to differentiate themselves from competitors that can only offer dial-up speeds or broadband service in a limited service area," said Scott Marshall, group vice president of the Cisco Service Provider Access Group and New World Carrier Services Group. "Our wide range of end-to-end, carrier-class broadband technologies, coupled with iPass' global roaming service availability through relationships with service providers, deliver a compelling way to make broadband access as ubiquitous as dial, and our service provider customers to be much more competitive."

Cisco and iPass are focusing their efforts on service providers integrating new broadband roaming infrastructures into their existing service architectures. Key requirements to be addressed are authentication integration, VPN interoperability, usage tracking and reporting, and billing settlement. Global Broadband Roaming will provide a single interface through the iPassConnect and Cisco VPN client software for users roaming across many broadband networks, while allowing companies to source their multi-network remote access from a single global service provider.

Global Broadband Roaming Availability

Cisco and iPass will start deploying the Global Broadband Roaming solution during the first quarter of 2001. The Global Broadband Roaming service would be made available to service providers and enterprise customers at the same time.
