TAMPA, Fla., October 30, 2000 - Time Warner Communications today announced that it has deployed business services using commercial cable networking solutions from Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Time Warner is offering advanced commercial services such as remote Internet access, virtual private networks (VPNs) and security firewalls to its small, medium and enterprise customers in the Tampa, Florida region.

"We're seeing that more and more customers are concerned about high security and need more services than a basic cable modem can provide," said Mark Bailey, vice president and general manager of online services for Time Warner Communications. "With Cisco's uBR900 series of cable access routers, we can provide the advanced security options that enable the highest levels of business connectivity."

Time Warner's small and medium-sized business customers have needs that include secure access for telecommuters, Intranet and Internet connectivity and branch office VPNs. "Every customer has different demands -- from security to application needs," said Bailey. "Cisco has put a lot of flexibility into its uBR905, uBR914 and uBR924 cable access routers, such as the ability to provide high-speed VPNs and firewalls. That makes it easy for us to provide solutions that meet a variety of customer needs."

Extending from the backbone to the headend and the customer premise, Time Warner's Cisco infrastructure employs the Cisco uBR7246 Universal Broadband Router, 12000 Series Internet router, and the 7500 Series Internet router in addition to the uBR904, uBR914 and uBR924 cable access routers. Recently awarded Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.0 certification by CableLabs., the Cisco uBR905 features hardware-accelerated IPSec for high performance VPNs. With a high-speed serial interface, the Cisco uBR914 can be used with a Cisco access router, or to provide lease-line replacement service. The award-winning Cisco uBR924 is the first DOCSIS-certified cable modem with integrated voice over IP ports.

Cisco's end-to-end broadband cable infrastructure enables cable operators to quickly and easily generate revenue from the rapidly growing business market. "Commercial services have allowed us to widen our product offering beyond traditional Internet access, which in turn has enabled us to substantially increase our customer base," said Bailey. "Since we've introduced cable-based commercial services to our market, demand has been tremendous."

"Time Warner's deployment of business-class services demonstrates its understanding that the market to provide services beyond basic high-speed Internet access is on the verge of exploding," said Tarun Loomba, manager of product marketing for Cisco's commercial solutions group. "Commercial services are a powerful way for cable operators to extend their services to a new customer base and differentiate themselves from their competitors."
