TAIPEI, Taiwan -- 13 September 2000 -- Seednet, the largest privately owned ISP in Taiwan, recently announced plans to adopt carrier-class Cisco GSR 12000 Series Routers from Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, in order to provide comprehensive New World services for its rapidly growing user base and to compete successfully in the burgeoning telecommunications market. This enhancement in Seednet's overall network infrastructure and bandwidth utilization will enable the company to implement a 21st-century Internet highway for the broadband era, and realize higher network throughput and quality of service for Seednet's users.

Seednet provides regular dial-up Internet access and broadband cable modem access service for individual subscribers, and offers corporate users a complete suite of internetworking communications solutions including network design, planning and support for leased line, ADSL, Co-location, Web hosting and VPN/VPDN services. The infrastructure expansion is expected to result in a rapid increase of performance for all of Seednet's services.

"In this ongoing trend of Internet development, an ISP's service portfolio and quality of service have become the end-users' primary considerations," said Larry Sun, country manager of Cisco Systems Taiwan. "Cisco's GSR 12000 has been widely recognized by multiple international carriers since its introduction. Kornet, the ISP subsidiary of Korea's telecommunications leader Korean Telecom, announced its use of Cisco GSR 12000 in February this year to increase nation-wide backbone bandwidth to 2.5 Gbps among eight major cities in Korea, including Seoul, in order to cope with growing users in the broadband era. Cisco is honored to lend its technology leadership and comprehensive service and support to Seednet's implementation of next-generation telecommunications services."

"Seednet chose Cisco's solution because of the company's reputation for producing world-leading network technologies and for excellent local customer support which provided us with crucial real-time technical support and consultation," said Cheng Chia-Chung, General Manager of Seednet. "To keep up with the growing number of subscribers, Seednet is aggressively upgrading existing infrastructure to increase our backbone bandwidth islandwide. By the end of this year, our backbone bandwidth will increase from T3 (45 Mbps) to STM1 level (155 Mbps) throughout Taiwan and even to STM4 level (622 Mbps) for the Taipei metropolitan area (from Hsi-Chi to Taipei). We have invested NT$1 billion in the construction of a Data Center building in Taipei to provide co-location, Web hosting, aggregated bandwidth, leased line, network security, 24/7 call center and other value-added services."

Seednet used Cisco's 12000 Series carrier-class routers in combination with Packet Over SONET/SDH or Packet Over Fiber technology. To enable the backbone to cope with rapid business growth, Seednet used Cisco's Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology to implement the whole IP network and achieve a more comprehensive IP QoS and IP VPN service portfolio. This will not only reduce costly investment in circuit switching technology and lower the operating costs for corporate users, but will also deliver higher network security, reliability, expandability and VPN service (including Intranet and Extranet) with multiple QoS levels to decrease management burdens for VPN clients.
