KUALA LUMPUR - August 31, 2000 - Maxis, one of Malaysia's leading digital mobile service provider, has announced the first live General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) call in Malaysia using Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) Global Telecom Solutions Sector's (GTSS) industry-leading data network solution and Motorola handsets.
Motorola, through its alliance with Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), is the only supplier worldwide with complete end-to-end GPRS network solutions in commercial service. Both BT Cellnet in the United Kingdom (UK) and T-Mobil in Germany launched their GPRS services in June, and Telsim in Turkey and China Unicom launched in August, enabled by the Motorola/Cisco GPRS solution and Motorola's GPRS handsets. Mumbai's BPL Mobile is the latest operator to announce the award of a GPRS contract to Motorola, adding India to the countries deploying the market-leading mobile data solutions. Motorola/Cisco GPRS networks are in place and operational around the world.
The GPRS trial, expected to last six months, will cover selected business and residential areas in the Klang Valley. Services that will be made available during this trial are wireless access to the Internet and wireless application protocol (WAP) solutions.
"This GPRS trial is a first in Malaysia, and Motorola, through its technology leadership, is very honoured to support Maxis in this historic moment," said Steve Shanck, vice president and general manager of GTSS's South Asia Division. "With GPRS, which is Phase 1 of Motorola's AspiraTM communications architecture, the path to 3G for network operators will be seamless. New services can be added quickly, and the end-to-end user experience is expected to be superior," said Shanck.
The Motorola/Cisco GPRS solution can be implemented over an existing GSM network, lowering their costs by enabling them to use their existing infrastructure. Motorola's GSM infrastructure systems are GPRS-ready, requiring only a software load and PCU addition, with no modifications to existing hardware. Offering controlled evolution to third generation (3G) mobile communications, the Motorola/Cisco GPRS data solution enables operators to take advantage of many new revenue opportunities. Cisco and Motorola are driving market growth by developing applications and value-added services to provide operators with innovative and competitive offerings for their subscriber base.
The Motorola/Cisco GPRS infrastructure is being deployed in 15 countries. Motorola and Cisco are the only vendors to have commercially launched live GPRS calls on full end-to-end equipment in multiple countries.
