Network Analysis Module (NAM) Available for the Catalyst 6000 Family of Switches

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 19, 2000 - Providing customers with enhanced network management and monitoring capabilities for high-speed switching environments, Cisco Systems today announced the availability of the Network Analysis Module (NAM) for its Catalyst 6000 family of switches. The NAM enables the intelligent network services required to drive the next generation Internet-based businesses by simplifying the management of complex multi-service networks.

"The Network Analysis Module supports our commitment to provide our Enterprise and Service provider customers with a comprehensive network management solution for the Catalyst 6000 family by delivering an integrated solution for trend and capacity analysis," said Ed Chapman, director of marketing at Cisco Systems.

A completely integrated solution, the NAM gathers multi-layer information about data and voice flows up to the application layer while monitoring multiple switch ports and virtual LANs (VLAN) simultaneously. The NAM complements the RMON SwitchProbe family and is a component of the Cisco end-to-end network management and monitoring portfolio. It helps network administrators not only in identifying applications flows and protocol distribution, but also performs trend analysis and capacity management.

"As we continue to expand our network with the rapid deployment of new applications, constant monitoring and management are required to maintain the highest levels of network availability" said Tom Seibert, network engineer at Eastman Kodak. "By implementing the Network Analysis Module, we are now able to gain greater visibility into our network traffic and also have a more comprehensive data collection capability."

The Catalyst 6000 family NAM can be deployed as an integrated module in all Catalyst 6000 family switches, helping administrators conserve rack space where it is at a premium. The NAM provides scalable performance, with over150-Kpps throughput per module and the option to deploy multiple NAM cards within a single chassis. The NAM is completely standards compliant, including full RMON-1 (RFC 2819) and RMON-2 (RFC 2021). It complies with the Switch Monitoring (SMON) protocol in LAN environments and High Capacity RMON (HC-RMON) for different RMON tables. In addition, the NAM can be used to monitor EtherChannel as well as Netflow Data Export (NDE) datagrams, reporting statistics as flows are established and terminated in a Catalyst 6000 family switch. The NAM is fully compatible and can be used with Cisco Works 2000 suite of network management solutions.

Pricing and Availability

The NAM for the Catalyst 6000 family is available now for $14,995 USD.
