High-End VPN Device Well-Positioned to Accommodate Explosion in Mobile Access to the Enterprise

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 31, 2000 - Continuing to provide intelligent broadband solutions that help customers utilize the Internet economy for business agility, Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the most powerful addition to its award-winning Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator series.

Optimized to handle up to 10,000 remote connections, the new Cisco VPN 3080 Concentrator meets the high-capacity demands of large enterprise organizations that are ramping-up to provide secure corporate network access to employees around the globe The new device also delivers the scalability, flexibility and performance that customers will need to prepare for the rising number of mobile employees seeking access to resources behind the firewall.

Mobile virtual private networks (VPNs) significantly affect the corporate enterprise. Analysts say wireless technology is booming, and some predict the number of wireless devices accessing the Internet will soon surpass that of PCs.

"As companies start granting network access to mobile devices like PDAs and cell phones, you're going to see greater demand for VPN tunneling capacity," said Paul Forbes, network engineer at Trimble, a Silicon Valley firm that develops products based on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. "The Cisco VPN 3080 Concentrator is ideally suited to meet this demand and will allow us to quickly and inexpensively roll out VPNs to our growing mobile work force."

The Cisco VPN 3080 Concentrator includes the new Cisco VPN Operating System Release 2.5, providing compatibility with more Cisco products, such as the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall family and the Cisco 7000 router series. Version 2.5 also offers hardware acceleration for Internet Key Exchange (IKE) operations. As a result, the Cisco VPN 3030, 3060 and 3080 Concentrators can negotiate 25 to 40 IPsec tunnels per second.

"Cisco has the most comprehensive lineup of VPN offerings on the market, and the Cisco VPN 3080 concentrator will certainly help extend our leadership into the growing mobile arena," said Mark Freitas, director and general manager of the Cisco VPN Access Group.
