THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., June 14, 2000 - Xircom, Inc. (Nasdaq: XIRC), the leading provider of mobile information access solutions, and Cisco Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced an agreement to cooperate in the development, marketing, and sales of mobile wireless LAN (WLAN) network adapters based on the IEEE 802.11b Wireless Ethernet standard. This agreement establishes Xircom as a total provider of wireless data solutions for Wide Area, Personal Area, and Local Area Networks and expands Cisco's Aironet(TM) WLAN product offering to include a complete family of industry standard network adapters providing customers with a complete solution for their client data networking requirements.
Xircom and Cisco will jointly develop and market handheld, Universal Serial Bus (USB), Mini PCI, and PC Card adapters in both industry-standard and Xircom-unique form factors, including Xircom's RealPort2(TM). Realport2 Integrated PC Cards provide additional flexibility by allowing users to select from separate function cards and combine them together for a fully customized, cable-free solution. RealPort2 cards can be used alone or mixed and matched with other RealPort2 cards including Ethernet, ISDN, 56K modem, 802.11b, and wireless data.
Wireless LAN access allows users with laptop, notebook, and handheld devices to move freely within a campus or building environment while maintaining uninterrupted connection to centrally located data and the Internet. One of the first new wireless adapters to be developed as part of the agreement between Cisco and Xircom will be Xircom's Springboard(TM) 802.11b wireless LAN module for the Handspring(TM) Visor(TM). The new wireless LAN module incorporates Cisco's Aironet(TM) technology, and is scheduled for availability late in the calendar year 2000.
"This agreement allows Xircom to combine our leadership in wired mobile data access with Cisco's leadership in the Internet infrastructure market," said Dirk Gates, Xircom chairman, president and chief executive officer. "With the adoption of the IEEE 802.11b standard, the WLAN market is now a viable solution for deployment in a variety of locations and applications."
"Cisco is delighted to collaborate with Xircom in developing and marketing industry-standard, wireless LAN adapters, and enabling true network mobility for organizations worldwide," said Larry Birenbaum, vice president and general manager for Cisco's Desktop Switching Business Unit in Cisco's Small/Medium Line of Business. "Our collective efforts will yield superior wireless solutions, and help establish high-speed wireless LAN connectivity as a must-have solution for mobile users."
