MANILA, Philippines -- 26 June 2000 -- Globe Telecom, a leading telecommunications provider in the Philippines, has strengthened its data network backbone with equipment from Cisco Systems, Inc., as it gears up to roll-out new value-added services based on IP (Internet Protocol), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and MPLS (Multi-protocol Label Switching) technologies this year.

The solution from Cisco Systems allows Globe Telecom to combine IP and ATM in one network, creating a highly scalable, intelligent Layer 3 platform with Quality of Service (QoS), privacy and any-to-any connectivity. Aside from high-speed Internet access, the network will also enable IP VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), Voice over IP and Unified Messaging.

Said Jesus Romero, Assistant Vice President for Data Communications of Globe Telecom: "This collaboration with Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking, sends a clear message to our customers that we are always at the forefront when it comes to vision for technology."

Romero added that as a data solutions provider that ensures value-for-money services to its customers, the innovative network move will further enhance the overall quality of Globe's offerings. "More importantly, this strengthens our strategy of providing relevant broadband solutions that enable converged voice, data and video applications," he said.

"In the New Internet Economy, speed and agility are crucial differentiators for companies. Globe Telecom's customers will be demanding services that will give them that edge when competing with other companies not only in the Philippines but worldwide," said Manuel Rivera, Country Manager of Cisco Systems Philippines. "By building such an advanced network, Globe Telecom has not only ensured that they will be able to deliver the services that are required by their customers, but they are also ensured that they stay right at the very top of the game."

Globe Telecom's data networking infrastructure will be powered by Cisco's 2500, 3640, 4500 and 4700 access routers, 7206 multifunction routers, 7513 and 7576 data and video routers, AS5300 universal access servers, BPX 8680 and MGX 8850 wide area switches, MGX 8220 edge concentrator and MGX 8240 private line gateway.

At present, Cisco equipment comprises 73 percent of the whole data network of Globe Telecom and 100 percent of the company's Internet service provider arm, GlobeNet.
