SAN JOSE, Calif. - June 13, 2000 - -Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO:NASDAQ) today announced that three enhancements to its Cisco 7500 series high-end routers, the Versatile Interface Processor 4 (VIP4), the Route Switch Processor 8 (RSP8), and the MIX-Enabled Chassis, are now all available to customers. These enhancements greatly improve the capacity and performance of the Cisco 7500 series routers.

"Customers with demands for very high performance and high capacity deployment are the key benefactors for the enhanced Cisco 7500 routers," said Tom Russell, director of marketing for the Wide Area Network Edge business unit. "These new capabilities give customers a wider choice of options and enable their networks to smoothly scale up to high performance, multi-protocol/service routing,"

Versatile Interface Processor 4 (VIP4)

Providing over twice the distributed switching performance and twice the aggregate bandwidth of previous model VIPs, the Versatile Interface Processor 4 (VIP4) enables high-performance switching, and scalable and WAN intelligent network services to meet the needs of high-performance applications. The VIP4 serves as an ideal platform for enterprise and service-provider networks that require high performance and processing power to support service-enabled edge and core applications. The VIP4 is available in two models, the VIP4-50 and VIP4-80.

Route Switch Processor 8 (RSP8)

The Route Switch Processor 8 (RSP8) is Cisco Systems' newest-generation, main system processor for the Cisco 7500 Series Router. The RSP8 increases switching performance more than 40 percent compared to the RSP4. The RSP8 is available as an upgrade to existing RSP4, RSP2, or RSP1-based systems, as well as Cisco 7500 system configurations. It serves as an ideal platform for enterprise and service provider networks that require additional performance and processing power to support service-enabled edge and core applications.

MIX-Enabled Chassis

Virtually identical to the current Cisco 7500 classic chassis, the new Cisco 7500 MIX-enabled chassis adds an important multiservice capability: the Multiservice Interchange (MIX) backplane. A Cisco 7500 series router with the MIX-enabled chassis and the DSP-farm capabilities of the digital voice port adapters provides a high-densityvoice and fax gateway solution to connect private branch exchanges (PBX), the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the WAN to create a multiservice network.

Pricing and Availability

The VIP-4, RSP8, the MIX-Enabled Chassis are all currently available for purchase. The VIP4-50 model is $11,000 and the VIP4-80 model is $15,000. The four models of the MIX-Enabled Chassis range in price starting at $21,400. And the price for the RSP8 is included in the Cisco 7500 models bundled with RSP8. Spare RSP8 units are priced at $18,000.
