LAS VEGAS, Nev., May 8, 2000 - Cisco Systems, Inc., today announced that Verio Inc., the world's largest web hosting company and a leading provider of comprehensive e-business services, has selected Cisco as a key enabler to deploy its hosting center expansion strategy. Cisco was chosen by Verio for its high-performance intelligent internetworking solutions that will be a key component of its planned $200 million web hosting center infrastructure expansion for 2000.
Verio's hosting center expansion will enable the company to dramatically increase its capacity to offer a broad range of web and application hosting services, including dedicated server and co-location hosting solutions. By year-end, Verio's hosting center capacity will be in excess of 650,000 square feet with the expansion of 21 new and existing locations across the United States. Currently, Verio's Cisco equipment-based facilities include hosting centers in California and Massachusetts.
At the core of a number of Verio's new hosting centers is Cisco's Catalyst 6500 series high-performance switches. These switches are used in managing customer network connectivity with Cisco's 12000 GSR series routers accessing Verio's tier one national backbone. By using the most sophisticated technology on the market today, Verio offers customers scalable bandwidth, flexibility and greater interoperability when building their e-business infrastructure and implementing mission-critical tasks such as customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning activities.
Specifically, one of the key benefits Verio has realized from deploying Cisco's high-end switching solutions is the ability to better manage customer traffic into its network. With its QoS rate-limiting ability and robust buffering for handling bursty traffic, the Catalyst 6500 is able to address Verio's unique needs as it expands its network and gains more users.
"Beyond the high-performance capabilities of its switching solution, such as its robust buffering functionality, we knew Cisco could provide us the long-term technology roadmap that would help in our hosting center expansion strategy," said Chris DeMarche, chief technology officer of Verio. We wanted to work with a company that could provide the insight and strategy that went beyond point products and could understand our business vision and help deploy on the infrastructure solutions to meet our goals."
The Catalyst 6500 series delivers a new line of high-performance switching solutions for campus networks. Designed to address the increased requirements for gigabit scalability, high-availability and multilayer switching in backbone, distribution and server-aggregation environments, the Catalyst 6500 series offers exceptional scalability and price/performance, supporting a wide range of interface densities, performance and high-availability options. Delivering application intelligence, quality-of-service mechanisms and security, Verio can effectively leverage its network as it offers reliable services to web hosting customers.
