LOS ANGELES, Calif., Dec. 15, 1999 - Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced a cost-effective set of hardware and software products that expand on the solutions offered by Cisco's market-leading uBR product family. The announcement was made here at the cable industry's Western Show.

"Cisco's uBR7200 Universal Broadband Routers allow cable operators to quickly and easily integrate New World services such as data, voice and video," said Paul Bosco, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Cable and Wireless business unit. "These new hardware and software solutions build on the success of the uBR7200 product family by providing high-performance, end-to-end solutions that are scaleable, reliable and manageable."

With the product extensions announced today, the uBR7200 product family can be deployed in large carrier-class cable architectures with hundreds of thousands of cable modems, set top boxes, and other IP-enabled devices. In addition, they increase network reliability and provide enhanced network management capabilities.

The solutions announced today include:

  • uBR7246VXR Universal Broadband Router, a high performance CMTS solution designed specifically for MSOs with high density needs or those who want to add residential voice or video services. The uBR7246VXR has a faster processor and higher backplane capacity than the uBR7246 and offers an optional Clock Card plug-in that provides end-to-end synchronization for G.711 connections such as fax and modem connections.
  • Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) port adapters for the uBR7246 and uBR7246VXR, a packet-optimized, high-speed optical transport solution that allows cable operators to meet increasing demands for bandwidth to support data voice and video services.. By enabling wide area clustering over backbone access rings and regional transport rings, DPT port adapters increase scalability while eliminating expensive layers of legacy transport gear.
  • MC16S Spectrum Management Card, which increases system reliability by offering MSOs advanced spectrum management capability to combat excessive ingress noise in the upstream path. If upstream performance becomes degraded, instead of blindly hopping to any available upstream channel, the MC16S Spectrum Management Card automatically sends data to the upstream channel with the least interference.
  • Cisco Cable Manager 1.0 and Cisco Troubleshooter 1.0, integral parts of Cisco's cable network management solution. Cable Manager performs proactive network alarm surveillance, while Troubleshooter is an easy-to-use and efficient tool to diagnose the HFC network. With Cisco Subscriber Registration Center (CSRC), Cisco's tool for provisioning cable modems, and CiscoWorks, which provides basic router management, Cable Manager and Troubleshooter form an end-to-end solution for managing cable and multi-service networks.
  • Cable Technology Suite, a software package of technologies that works in tandem with Cisco IOS. software to increase the reliability of IP services being delivered across the HFC network.
  • DOCSIS 1.0 Plus Software, which provides a comprehensive set of Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities, based on the DOCSIS 1.1 specification. This software enables cable operators to maximize revenues by offering multiple classes of service tailored to the needs of their subscribers.

"With these product extensions, Cisco is paving the way for cable operators to expand their customer base and service offerings," said Stephen Van Beaver, Senior Vice President of Operations of Road Runner, a leading online cable service. "The uBR7200 product family continues to be a cost-effective and reliable solution for scaling and managing networks."

The new extensions to the uBR7200 product family will be demonstrated at this year's Western Cable Show at Cisco's booth #3819.
