SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 27, 1999 - In an effort to further increase the value and capability of standards-based virtual private networking (VPN) solutions, Cisco Systems, Inc. is sponsoring an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) VPN Interoperability Workshop Jan. 9 to 14 at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego, Calif. The engineering workshop, organized by the California Broadband Users' Group (CalBUG), is specifically designed to enable companies to test the interoperability of their standards-based VPN solutions with those of other vendors.

"Successful interoperability testing demonstrates that a technology is solid, something the Internet can depend on," said Fred Baker, IETF chairman. "The IETF is very pleased with this progress, and we appreciate the support of participating vendors. The IPSec working group has worked diligently to drive standards that provide real security for Internet business solutions. Certifiable identification of the correspondents in a transaction and methods to keep its details private are critical to electronic commerce."

The VPN Interoperability Workshop is open to companies developing products that implement IP Security (IPsec), Internet Key Exchange (IKE), IKE-Cfg, IKE-Auth., Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), L2TP over Transport-Mode IPSec, IP Payload Compression (IPComp), Compression Control Protocol (CCP) with Microsoft Point to Point Compression (MPPC) and Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE), MS Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (MS CHAP) Version 2, Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE), PPP over ATM and L2TP over ATM.

UUNET, an MCI Worldcom Company, will provide the equipment for the test network and access to the Internet. CalBUG, formerly called the California ISDN Users' Group, will provide the network infrastructure equipment for the workshop test network.

Applications for the workshop can be submitted on the Web at http://www.calbug.org:8080/vpnworkshop or by contacting Anita Freeman at (408) 527-7168, anfreeman@cisco.com.
