Copenhagen -- October 8, 1999 -- Denmark's second largest cable operator, Telia Stofa, is poised to deliver a host of impressive broadcast and interactive services to its nation-wide installed customer base, relying on its Cisco-based New World, multi-service, IP-over-cable network.
Telia Stofa A/S, a cable subsidiary of Telia AB, is Denmark's second largest cable operator. With more than 500,000 homes passed, Telia Stofa delivers high-speed Internet access to residential and business customers over its broadband infrastructure. Today, StofaNet Internet Access is ranked as the best Internet access service for homes anywhere in Denmark, reflected by praise from the press. StofaNet's high levels of customer satisfaction are reflected by their impressive churn rate, nearly zero.
Telia Stofa is the only large cable operator in Denmark to provide integrated, high speed Internet access services to its subscribers. Using the CATV duplex infrastructure, the Cisco cable headend equipment connects both residences and business customers in the cable network environment. Cisco had what Telia Stofa needed: technology in the cable/IP space, standards, a safe migration path, and a shared vision for IP and multiple integrated services including voice-over-IP over cable.
Mr. Kaj Skov, Telia Stofa's CTO and Business Development Manager for Interactive Services talked about the partnership: "Telia Stofa chose to go with Cisco Systems because it is the Internet technology leader and because of its commitment to focus on industry standards. We found Cisco Systems to be a significant player in the cable technology arena with a commitment on DOCSIS."
In the cable world, the DOCSIS standard is critical when deploying an infrastructure that can support a multitude of next-generation, IP-based services.
"Telia Stofa wants to bundle content services with access, uniquely positioning them to offer New World Services, including voice, video conferencing, video on demand, streaming video and pay-per-view, along with interactive content applications. Because of Telia Stofa's already successful cable and ISP business, those 500,000 TV subscribers are also potentially 500,000 gateways for New World Services and thus new revenue streams for Telia", says Mr. Torben Haase, general manager in Cisco Systems Denmark, -"and Cisco Systems is dedicated to partnering with Telia Stofa in order to realize these ambitions"
Phil Sorsky, Cisco EMEA Broadband Sales Manager says, " We are particularly excited to be working with Telia-Stofa since our two companies' cultures are very similar: We are both focused on delivering New World services and exploiting IP as the ideal medium for converged voice-data-video solutions; we both see industry standards as the most rapid way to offer consumers a broad service at an affordable price; and most importantly we both attach a high importance to customer satisfaction"
Why Cisco?
Cisco was the obvious choice for Telia Stofa because Cisco was the lone vendor who could deliver scalability, standards, investment protection, and vision. Kaj Skov talked about Telia Stofa's partnership with Cisco: "Shared vision, good relationship chemistry, and the Cisco commitment to provide us with scalable technology and migration have all been important criteria in partnering with Cisco Systems. We are convinced that having Cisco Systems as a strategic business partner can help us successfully deploy an IP-based multiservice network and that together, on a continuous basis, we can further enhance this network and the services offerings on top of it."Cisco Systems
