SAN JOSE, Calif. -- October 22, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that its 7200 Series multifunction router family has surpassed the 50,000 unit shipment milestone. Demand for the Cisco 7200 is driven by its high-performance wide area network (WAN) edge connectivity capabilities, which allow both service provider and enterprise customers to cost-effectively deploy New World applications such as multiservice networking and virtual private networks (VPNs).

"We are constantly evolving the Cisco 7200 product line to support our customers' diverse requirements," said Seenu Banda, manager of product marketing in Cisco's enterprise WAN business unit. "As a result, we have created a cost-effective, single-platform WAN solution with the high-end performance, density, availability and scalability to be deployed from enterprise to service provider point of presence (POP) environments."

Enhanced Price/Performance Features for Intelligent Network Services

Now featured on the Cisco 7200 series routers are the NPE-175 and NPE-225-two new network processing engines that enhance price/performance characteristics of the router platform, providing intelligent network services ideal for high-performance WAN-edge applications. The NPE-225 and NPE-175 are based on a new modular, flexible and highly-scalable architecture for rich performance improvement at low prices. These new processing engines, combined with the Cisco 7204VXR and Cisco 7206VXR chassis with integrated multiservice interchange (MIX), enable flexible configurations for a variety of VPN and multiservice applications. (See July 26, 1999 press release entitled "Cisco Announces New Multiservice Capabilities on Cisco 7200 Series Platform")

"The Cisco 7200's flexibility and multifunction capabilities make it an ideal 'one box solution' that allows us to incorporate value-added applications such as accounting and quality of service, while also providing high-speed access," said Raffi Tashjian, senior network analyst at Freightliner Corp. "This not only simplifies our network architecture, but also allows us to significantly reduce WAN provisioning costs. The 7200's voice capabilities will also be a key factor in achieving a quick return on investment as we integrate multiservice capabilities into our network."

Dramatic Scalability Increase for Broadband DSL Services

New capabilities on the Cisco 7200 also include delivery of up to 1,500 point-to-point protocol (PPP) subscriber sessions per system. This substantial increase in scalability makes the Cisco 7200 an industry-leading solution for service providers wanting to offer broadband digital subscriber line (DSL) services, as well as a cost-effective tool for enterprises managing their own high-speed services for telecommuters.
