KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- August 10, 1999 -- MIMOS Berhad, which operates JARING, the leading Internet service provider in the country, announced today that it has completed the deployment of SuperJARING, an OC-48 Internet Backbone Infrastructure with 2.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) transmission speed and bandwidth, the fastest type of backbone service available in the world.

The new multi-million dollar backbone network was built with leading-edge equipment from Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. The announcement marks a new phase in the MIMOS-Cisco relationship with the two companies agreeing to work closely to deliver New World services in Malaysia. SuperJARING is the next phase of JARING, which has provided Internet connectivity throughout the country for the past seven years, and the first in Malaysia's step towards the New World of Internet communications.

SuperJARING, which currently runs through Pulau Pinang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, will raise the capacity of JARING by an order of magnitude. One OC-48 connection can support more than 175,000 dial-up users sending and receiving files at the same time. More importantly, SuperJARING will be capable of providing next-generation services such as Internet Telephony, IP VPNs (Internet Protocol Virtual Private Networks), video-on-demand, distance learning and telemedicine.

Besides its speed and bandwidth, SuperJARING has also set several other world records. First, the backbone network was built completely on Cisco 12000 gigabit switch routers (GSRs) over dark fiber without the need for a transport layer of equipment such as SONET or SDH (Synchronous Digital Network). This saves a significant amount of money on network and operational costs. Second, the backbone, consisting of three GSRs in Pulau Pinang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, a distance of over 700 km, is the longest IP over fiber network of its kind.

"Information technology and the Internet in particular will be a great enabler for Malaysia. The government has identified IT as one of the keys for our future success. MIMOS' charter has been to develop the infrastructure that will serve as the platform for that growth. With the completion of SuperJARING, we are close to that goal," said Dr. Mohamed Bin Awang Lah, Vice President of Technology Development, MIMOS.

Said Gary Jackson, Director, Service Provider Line of Business, Asia-Pacific, Cisco Systems: "With SuperJARING, Malaysia has one of the fastest and most advanced IP networks in the world. The New World services that will be based on this network will give businesses and consumers in Malaysia a tremendous competitive edge. We are proud to be working with MIMOS and playing a key role in the development of the New World of Communications in Malaysia."

At the heart of SuperJARING is the Cisco GSR 12000 series, the premier routing product family from Cisco Systems designed and developed for the core of service provider and enterprise IP backbones. To enable the network to run directly over dark fiber and without the need for a transport layer of equipment, the OC-48 Cisco GSRs used in SuperJARING were configured with Long Reach 1550nm optic lasers. Cisco's GSR 12000 series simplify network transport infrastructures and easily scales for the largest backbone networks.

Existing JARING nodes, which now number 73 around the country, will be able to take advantage of the SuperJARING backbone, which will subsequently link the entire nation. The 2.5 Gbps high-speed bandwidth will also allow MIMOS to plan for new value-added services in the future such as distance learning and IP VPNs. Schools will then be able to connect to the Internet enabling faster exchange of information and ready access to global resources. IP VPN services will enable businesses to use SuperJARING like a private network with access to the Internet without worrying about security, application integration, scalability or flexibility.

Internet Telephony and video over IP will also be possible in the future. Companies such as healthcare organisations and financial institutions will also be able to use SuperJARING services.
