SYDNEY, Australia -- August 18,1999 -- Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced a US$45m investment and launch of its Asia Pacific Technical Assistance Centre (TAC) in Sydney, Australia. The Centre was officially inaugurated by Senator the Hon. Richard Alston, Australian Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.

The facility is one of four Cisco global TACs, providing 24 hour technical maintenance and support services in more than 15 languages to enterprises, telecommunications companies and government agencies worldwide.

"We are delighted to be making this investment in Australia and the Asia Pacific region," said Richard Freemantle, Senior Vice President of Cisco's Asia Pacific Theatre. "Due to the dramatic growth of the Internet and early signs of economic recovery in Asia, we are very optimistic about our continued growth in the Asia Pacific region this year. Companies are increasingly using the Internet to grow their businesses and obtain a competitive advantage in their markets. With this facility and investment Cisco furthers its commitment to providing world class service and support to its customers and partners as they expand their businesses by using the Internet."

"Australia is committed to being a world leader in information technology and to supporting the expansion plans of global companies such as Cisco Systems," said Senator Alston. "We are confident that Australia's outstanding infrastructure, educational system and robust economy provide an ideal environment for investments of this kind."

In addition to providing technical support services, the Asia Pacific TAC offers a world-class laboratory for training specialists in networking and Internet technology. The lab is designed to emulate production networks, enabling Cisco engineers to design, test, and trouble-shoot new and emerging Internet technologies.
