SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 3, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and Conxion Corporation, a nationwide all-Internet Protocol (IP) fiber-optic network and data center operator, today announced that Conxion has deployed one of the most fault-tolerant, high-performance IP networks in the US exclusively using Cisco's newest equipment for critical network infrastructure.
As a participant in the Cisco Powered Network program, "Conxion is an early adopter in deploying a collapsed redundant gigabit network utilizing the Gigabit Switch Router (GSR) 12000," said Graeme Fraser, vice president and general manager for Cisco's Optical Internetworking Business Unit. "By delivering dedicated IP optical connectivity, customers gain reliable, private and secure bandwidth solutions built on Cisco's superiority in IP networking and New World services."
Conxion, the industry leader in high-performance downloads, provides backbone and network services such as Internet access, Web hosting, application-hosting and advanced security services to large customers like Microsoft and Internet pure-play companies such as Ariba and Stamps.com who are delivering the next generation of Internet applications. In order to do this, Conxion created its own OC-192 fiber backbone and nationwide data centers, deploying a signature Packet over SONET (PoS) mesh network architecture that offers redundancy and fault-tolerance from the fiber layers and network architecture down to the device level.
"We ask CIOs to bet their careers on us and that means no failure," said Antonio Salerno, CEO of Conxion. "Working with Cisco has allowed us to push the boundaries of IP engineering. By upgrading to Cisco's GSR 12000, Conxion is able to provide our customers the highest performance and greatest reliability in the most demanding application environments in the world."
Conxion relies on Cisco's GSR 12000 configured with multiple interfaces for its bandwidth requirements. "We recently stress tested Cisco's GSRs ," said Rod Scott, Conxion's director of network technology. "We pushed them to as much as 490Mbps on a single interface for sustained periods of time. The GSR was able to sustain traffic loads up to 800 Mbps. with no problem. I'm happy to say that the Cisco gear was one thing we didn't have to worry about."
Conxion uses dozens of Cisco routers at its network's edges and core. At the edge of its network, Conxion uses the Cisco GSR 12000 configured with multiple, high-speed interfaces at OC3, OC12 and OC 48 capacities to manage external traffic. Also, Conxion's network is supported by Cisco support solutions. SMARTnet provides Conxion enhancement and maintenance support resources and includes 24x7x365 access to Cisco Connection Online (CCO), Cisco's award-winning interactive support tool, operating system software refresh on demand, 24x7x365 access to the Technical Assistance Center (TAC), and 4 hour advance parts replacement.
