SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 9,1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. announced today a strategic Multiservice initiative designed to create new world-wide channels that will better serve the rapidly growing Multiservice market. NEC Business Network Solutions, Inc. (NEC BNS) is an early participant of the initiative, working jointly with Cisco to develop Multiservice solutions, services, and support.

The ability to deliver data, voice, and video applications over a New World infrastructure is fundamentally changing the way business is conducted. The implementation of a Multiservice network system can provide companies with key competitive advantages and new business opportunities by significantly improving product time-to-market and product service.

"To enable widespread adoption and support for Multiservice networks, it is imperative that we build a knowledgeable global channel to deliver Multiservice solutions and services," said Tom Stevenson, vice president of Global Partners at Cisco Systems." Cisco's Strategic Multiservice Channel Development Initiative is the first step in migrating the channel community toward the business opportunities and competitive advantage that can be gained by being early to market with service and support for Multiservice solutions."

Cisco and NEC BNS will develop Multiservice capabilities by combining Cisco's technical specialization programs and professional offerings with NEC BNS's strong tradition of customer satisfaction. NEC BNS plans to significantly expand its personnel resources with the consultative, design, and implementation skills necessary to assist their customers through the migration process from traditional telephony and data structures to new Multiservice networks.

"NEC BNS has built a solid foundation of legacy telephony and data resources," said Tom Burger, president and CEO, NEC BNS. "We are unique because we have the intellectual resources and systems needed to deploy Multiservice solutions and services now."

Cisco's specialization programs focus on providing Cisco channel partners with resources for developing their expertise in specific technology-focused areas. Cisco's specialization programs will enable the channel to sell, design, install and support complex technology solutions in these five key segments of the global internetworking market including, WAN, SNA/IP Integration, Voice Access, Security and Network Management.

To demonstrate Multiservice capabilities, NEC BNS is building both its proof-of-concept labs and internal production network using Cisco's Multiservice Solutions. In addition, it is building a Cisco "end-to-end" network that will demonstrate new world applications, IP telephony products, and QoS using Cisco's Multiservice infrastructure and voice over IP telephony equipment. NEC BNS will work with Cisco field sales teams and installation, and implementation groups to provide both NEC BNS and Cisco customers with a variety of Multiservice networking solutions and support.
