LOS ANGELES, Calif -- July 7, 1999 -- TelePacific Communications, in conjunction with Jetstream Communications Inc. and Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), has completed a toll-quality, multi-line Voice over Digital Subscriber Line (VoDSL) test today to a TelePacific business customer in Los Angeles. This next-generation technology demonstration, which included the simultaneous delivery of multiple telephone lines and high-speed Internet access over a single DSL circuit, was delivered over TelePacific's data network utilizing its Class 5 local telephone switch, VoDSL equipment from Jetstream, and DSL access multiplexer and router technology from Cisco Systems.
Through this demonstration, First American Bank, a Los Angeles-based financial institution experienced the benefits of toll-quality, multi-line phone communication and high-speed continuous Internet access over a single DSL circuit - one copper twisted pair. Jetstream's VoDSL equipment enables TelePacific to dynamically allocate bandwidth of the DSL line to deliver up to 16 traditional telephone lines in addition to high-speed, dedicated Internet access.
"Convergence of voice, data and Internet solutions utilizing DSL access will provide our business customers, like First American Bank, with competitive and cost-effective solutions to meet their ever-changing telecommunications needs," said David Glickman, chairman and CEO of TelePacific Communications. "TelePacific is very excited to work with both Jetstream and Cisco in the advancement of Voice over DSL," added Glickman.
Jetstream's VoDSL solution will enable TelePacific to deliver low cost, multi-line telephone service from its existing Class 5 telephone switch over its DigitalVelocity( DSL data network. The solution is made possible with Jetstream's CPX-1000 large-scale voice gateway, which supports ATM-based DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAM) such as the Cisco 6100 series DSL Access Concentrator.
"Voice over DSL is a significant new application for competitive telecommunications," said S. 'Sundi' Sundaresh, president and CEO of Jetstream. "It will allow competitive carriers such as TelePacific to enable the much broader small business market to experience the promise and benefits of the Telecommunications Act of 1996."
"Telepacific has embraced the New World vision of data and voice travelling together on a single packet-based network," said Tim McShane, director of marketing for the DSL Business Unit at Cisco. "Voice over DSL as a value-added service will enable them to expand their market and generate additional revenue while delivering significant cost savings to their business customers."
Earlier this year, TelePacific announced its qualification as a Cisco Powered Network as part of a broader strategic alliance with Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. TelePacific has incorporated Cisco high-speed DSL and routing technology into its DigitalVelocity( data network, which allows TelePacific to deliver dedicated high-speed Internet access to customers up to 25 times faster than traditional dial-up services. DSL offers high-speed Internet access at a price that is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses. Now with the addition of Jetstream's VoDSL solution, TelePacific is able to further leverage Cisco's technology for the delivery of multi-line telephone service.
