SAN JOSE, Calif. -- July 22, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the availability of the User Registration Tool (URT) version 1.2, a dynamic switch port configuration solution permitting network access based on user identification.
Novell Directory Services (NDS) and Microsoft Windows NT customers can assign user names defined within their directories to network policy and privileges within URT. URT takes advantage of these directory associations by facilitating campus mobility and walk-up computing.
"This product brings numerous benefits to our organization," said Quan Nguyen, network administrator of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. "It allows protected access to our network within our open computer lab and public access network jacks for our growing student community. Since URT leverages existing user authentication schemes such as NDS and NT domain controller, we save significant administrative set-up time which yields easy deployment on campus."
With URT 1.2 mobility services are available across the entire Catalyst switch product line, including the Catalyst 6000, 6500, 5000, 5500, 4000, 2900XL series and Catalyst 1900/2820. URT has been enhanced with an easy-to-administer user interface and the ability to track users within the network by their directory assigned login name. Additionally, URT supports policy assignment based on a users NT group association or NDS Organizational Unit (OU).
URT intelligently configures roaming users to Catalyst-based switched networks by the detection of the end hosts login name, their location within the network, and the privileges assigned within the URT policy server. Identification configurations are automatically downloaded from the policy server to the switch. URT redundant architecture ensures a high availability solution.
